Inves tigation by county officers at Auburn proved that the four children of 8. A. Hewitt, found flead yesterday in the. buorning home of the family, had been struck on the head with some blunt Instrument, the skulls having been fractured. The father, a railroad brakeman. was taken to Auburn today. In the morgue, with the bodies of his dead children lying before him, he repeated the story he told yesterday when he was arrested. He said he was sleep ing in the cottage with the four chil dren when the fire was discovered at S o'clock Sunday morning. He said a lamp that was left burning in thn room where the four children slept must have exploded. He was awak ened by the smoke, he said, and at temped to reach the children's room, but was unable to do so on account or the progress the fire had made. "Acknowledging the vote of the land owners Involved, the county court this morning formally signed the ordor creating the West Land Irrigation Dis trict out of Western Land & irriga tion project lands west of the Umatil la river in the west end of the coun ty. An abstract of the vote taken Saturday was filed showing 33 for ano 13 against the project. The organiz ers of the project proposed to take water from the Umatilla river below the Furnish dam, siphon It across nt the Bond Bros, ranch and convey it through a canal for several miles to the mouth of Alkali canyon where It is proposed to build a reservoir that will store up water for summer use. If the project carries out its plan', which will cost not less than t200.000, 1 Is estimated, there will be plenty o( water to Insure crops every ye.ir on this land. DR. G. E.
