What the Picture Theaters Have to Tell You. FJj PASO LIKED 'KM. For snapping the big border raid scenes In the William Fox photoplay "The Love Thief." the entire com pany was transported to El Paso, Texas, where the genuine local color could be found. Director Richard Stanton headed the group. This Is what the El Paso Herald had to say of the arrival of the movie players: One of the biggest feature pictures the William Fox Feature Film com pany has ever made will probably be produced In El Paso shortly. It la the plan to secure troops from among those now camped at El Paso. If this can be done the picture will be made here. The battle scenes are to be staged on the sides of Mount Franklin. Local employment agen cies will be engaged to secure the men for "the Mexican army." The picture will show a battle between Mexican bandits and American troops. In the course of the making of the picture It will be necessary to destroy an entire Mexican village and this may have to be built, but an effort will be made to buy up a number of adobe houses In some part of the city near Rl0 Grande for this work. ""' Mr Elfelt finds that the setting here will be perfect for the big pic ture and If he can only complete the arrangements, he says the company should lbe here by next Thursday to begin the work It will take them about six weeks to make the picture an f everything Is successful It may m the permanent location of a For stu(Mo at 'El Paso. Both stars, William courtenay and Luille Lee Stewart, work very hard in "The Ninety and Nine," which Is a screen adaptation from the well known stage success by Ramsey Mor ris. In this production both Mr. Cour tenay and Miss Stewart drive a loco motive through a burning forest. These scenes could not be omitted without the great punch of the story being lost, but neither star objected and preparations were made for their filming. For the half hour in which it took to photograph these scenes, dainty Lu elle became a fireman and worked away shoveling the coal Into the en gine while Mr. Courtenay acted as engineer. In some Instances when they are in the thick of the forest fir smoke they are hardly discernible, but when their engine comes to a clearing their faces may be seen streaked with soot and smoke. It was no easy task to run this huge locomotive over burning bridges through rows of fiery trees and Into dense smoke, but both stars took It as a matter of course and went through their scenes without a murmur. In addition two cartoon comedies, "Maud the Mule" and Krazy Kats." Pastime, Sunday and Monday. Refined Vaudeville and "The Yellow Pawn" at Alta Friday and Sat day. The cruel, merciless methods of the "third degree" for criminals have been raised to the nth power by the modern detective and police heads. The amount of labor they will go through to entrap, ensnare and bring forth a confession of the person they believe guilty, is shown In the most graphic manner in the Jesse L. Lasky production of "The Yellow pawn" which will be seen at the Alta theater Friday and Saturday with two clever stars , Cleo Ridgley and Wallace Reid In the principal roles. The play has to do with the In trigues of a district attorney, jealous of his wife's Infatuation of a young artist, and the methods he employs In a vain endeavor to send an Innocent man to the gallows, and how, whilo furthering his nefarious crime, ha VAUiWIL Hi 1 1 J V A U D E V I L L E Via ill J 1 1 i JUST A LITTLE BETTER THAN THE REST "BELMONT AND LEIGHTON" Singing, Talking Acrobatic Wonders. This is the way one critic has summed up the evidence for and against this play. Amusement seekers above all other classes of people are in search of new and novel thinss rarities. The scope of the characters of this play Is universal. The heroine Is a poor girl who Is strug gling to make an honest living. The hero Is a man of unlimited resources. The strong conndy parts are characters who are a typical middle class couple. The gripping story of the piece Is so constructed that you will lauKh with one eye and cry with the oilier.
