Prefacing the statement that he makes no charges against any one and that his Information 1 Is based only on hear say and rumor, Representative Wood, mentioned the niynes of Secretary Tumulty, Mr. Rolling, the president's brother-in-law; Otto Kuhn, of the leb company ;and Paul M. Warburg, of the federal reserve board when he appeared as the first witness of the investigation of the leak of Wllson't rote. Wood wanted to testify behind closed doors but was unsuccessful, -"cathingly denouncing Wood for mentioning his name Tumulty has prepared a statement In which he said Wood should apologize for bringing his name Into the proceeding merely on hearsay Information. He said he would gladly appear on the committee without subpoena. DELEGATION PLANS TRIP TO ST. PAUL Effort Is being made to organize a Pendleton delegation to the annual midwinter carnival of sports to be held In St. Paul the latter part of this month and the first part of next month. Already a number have sig nified their Intention of attending and It Is hoped that the delegation can bo made large enough to make a creditable showing for the Round-L'p Tity. Louis Hill, president of the Great Northern and who has developed in to an ardent Round-Cp booster as a result of his visit to the 1916 show, has urged Pendleton to send an ex cursion to St. Paul's winter show. The Pendleton Woolen Mills furnished the blanket cloth for several thousand suits for N. P. and Great Northern marching clubs. Burbank REINED By Ten true bills and one not true bill were returned this morning by the grand Jury which has been in session since Monday. The jury yet has a number of matters to Investi gate before its final report. Del Shilts, whose home is In the south end of the county, had his name on three of the true bills. With his wife. Julia Walker Shilts. he was Jointly Indicted on a charge of the larceny of three cows and three h,!R fr"m, talker, mother of Mrs. Shilts. On the other two he was charged with larceny by bailee, it being alleged that' he sold a cow and a calf belonging to Mrs. Walker without her consent. Harvey Pensene, one of the four men who recently broke jail and who was recaptured, was Indicted twice, once Jointly with John R. Burnsc on a charge of assaulting and robbing Joe Miller, and once on a charge of larceny from a dwelling, it being al leged that he stole a pair of shoes from the home of Hugh Bell. This was during the time he was dodging the officers after his escape. Burns has not vet been recaptured. Negro Own Attorney. J. R. Ed Vandiver, one of the two escapes not yet re taken, was Indicted for stealing grain, and J. B. Girtnn. whose parole has been revoked and who was taken back to the penitentiary to serve out a pre vious sentence, was Indicted for lar ceny of harness. The person who drew the tenth Indictment Is not yet In custody and the name is withheld. A not true bill was returned against P. B. Lane and Jess Davis, who had been charged with wanton cruelty to ward animals, it having been alleged that they shot a dog belonging to M. Bun hett. The case came from T'niatilla The two Shilts. Rodgers. Bensene and "Gunis were arraigned this morn ing and tomorrow morning at 10 o' clock was set a- the time for pleading. The Shilts will be represented by W. M. Peterson. J., police department will be dishonorably dis charged today oiTcharges of neglect ot duty. For many months Kitty has been the headquarters house cat and until yesterday bore a spotless reputation a a member ot the force. Then appeared Patrolman Martin Lautermilch. lio deposed that fur several niiihts he I was unable to sleep because of hish goings on m the prisoners' kitchen. Allowing that it was a rat. Lauter milch put Kitty on guard, but tho noise continued, so on Saturday night he went on the Job with Kitty, armed with a night stick and flashlight. About midnight, Lautermilch sa.' a rat was heard nibbling at a piece of cheese placed as bait for him. The policeman avers he turned on his flashlight and was about to use his club when Kitty and the rat began to frolic about the floor, rolling over and playfully boxing each other's ears. Astounded, the cop was about ! to get In some club work, when Miss J Kitty picked up the . rat and totel him back to his hole and exit. To day there will be a new police cat. At a meeting of the city library board held last evening two members of the board, Mrs. G. M. Rice and Mrs. C. F. Colesworthy tendered their resignations, the resignation of Mrs. Rice being due to 111 health while no cason was given by Mrs. Colesworthy for her resignation. The resignations leave two positl- ons vacant on the board and It is un- derstood a caucus will be held by the mayor .and council today for the pur pose of deciding upon the appointees. The meeting last evening was the first session of the board since in corporation papers were filed. Three of the board officers, vice president, secretary and treasurer were sworn in but Mrs. Sturgls who had been chosen as president of the incorporation de clined to be sworn In saying she was t ot prepared to participate In the new organization. Dr. Sommerville was elected vice president of the board. Mrs. Colesworthy having held that position. PENDLETON MAN A FIGURE Mrs. Maurice Lecrier Was Dancing Partner of Man Killed Following Cafe Quarrel New Year's Nlfrht. A Pendleton woman Mrs. Maurice Leeder. figured in an episode at San Francisco New Years morning which resulted in the violent death of J. R. Buckley, a traveling salesman. Mrs. Leeder is the wife of the trav eling representative of Folger & Co. in this territory and they have been living in the G. W. Coutts home on the north side. Last month she and her husband left for San Francisco to attend a meeting of Folger's sales men. They were members of a party occupying a table at Lamb s cafe In San Francisco on Xew Year's even ing. While dancing with Mrs. Leedef Buckley accidently bumped into Har ry McQuire. who has a reputation ot being a professional slugeer. After the dance McGnlre walked across the room to Buckley's t:ible and struck him In the face. The management elected him. He waited outside and when the party came out assaulted Bucklev again. TEAMS IN CLASH TONIGHT A double header basket ball game will be played tonight in the high school gymnasium; the Hermiston high school girls playing the local girls and the alumnae playing the high school boys 'team. Both games are arousing a great deal of Interest among local fans, the alumnae-high school game especially, for It will be here that the first chance to see last ytars championship team pitted apainst this years team will be af forded. The two teams are well matched and predictions of victory for both sides are being made. The alumnae will probably have as large a back ing as the high school team, as a treat number of downtown support ers have signified their intentions of looting for them. The girls' game will help in de ciding the championship of Eastern Oregon and for that reason should prove to be an exciting contest. That the four railway broth erhoods will take a vote whether to strike in event the eight hour work day is not granted by the railroads was the declaration of the Ameri can Railway Employes Journal in the January issue published today. According to the Journal the brotherhood chiefs have ask ed the 640 general chairmen to meet in Chicago on January 11. It says: "The meeting is for the purpose of consulting the general chairmen, to de cide what line of action will be made necessary by the man agers refusal to put into effect the eight hour day.
