Sieepmcn Decide That Doulrie Boun
ty System Is Not the Bext Way of

ReHpou-ible for Spread of Epi
demic. The coming legislature will be a,k
ed to appropriate $15,000 a year for
the next blennlum to cooperate wit'i
the federal government In fighting the
epidemic of rabies which has been
prevalent throughout eastern Oregon
during the past few years. This is th
statement of E. F. Averiil, district in
spector for the biological survey who
recently conferred with the sheepmen
ait their convention in Heppner and
with Dr. David N. Roberg, state health
officer. The sheepmen have decided
that the double bounty system 'is not
the best way of getting rid of the
coyotes.
"I feel vthat we are gaining on the
disease somewhat," said Mr. Averlll,
"but we need more professional
hunters to get out on the ranges and
kill off the coyotes. We had intend
ed ito ask the legislature to continue
the double bounty on coyotes, but aft
er conferences with sheepmen and
others we have decided that th
bounty system is not the best way of
ridding the country of the danger. II
is now propped to ask the legislature
for 115.000 a year for the coming bl
enn'ium to cooperate with the federal
bureau In sending hunters Into the
districts affected and proceed with
the killing In a systematic way.
"All the counties of eastern Oregon
are now suffering from the ravages
of rabid coyotes. A prominent factor
al.-'O Is the ranch dog, which once bi;-.
ten. transmits the disease to cattlf
and sheep as badly as the coyotes. W
need a law to empower the state offi
cials to kill off these dogs that am
suspected of being rapid. It la haM
on the dogs, but the situation is so se
rious that some hing must be done
