TIIKIIJ-S, IjOVK AND PATHOS
APLENTY IN "THE LAST MAN '
Hcniarkahle Pouts Performed in
Thrilling Aedon of Story.
The Last Man,' the Vltagraph Blue
Klbbon feature, in five parts, with an
all star cast, Including William Dun
can, Mary Anderson, Corinne Griffith,
Jack Mower, and Otto Lederer Is the
attraction at the Pastime theater on
Sunday and Monday.
This picture Is overflowing with
thrills real thrills the kind every
audience loves to experience. One
scene In particular Is a most risky
one.
The story calls for William Duncan
to carry Jack Mower on hi back in
order to escape from the Indians who
are on the war path. Corinne Grif
fith, too, is in the party.
The only means of escape is to
cross a certain hand-made bridge
which spans a deep chasm In which
the turbulent waters of a mountain
stream flow. This bridge Is suspend
ed from two trees and Is high In the
air. It is constructed from rope and
narrow slates and, as the players cross
It can be seen to shake dangerously
from side to side. It Is a well known
fact that such bridges have a tend
ency to overturn and it was only
through the greatest courage on the
pan of the players that this bridge
was used.
The first party crossed over In safe
ty then the story called for the pur
suing Indians to follow. Naturally
the bridge had to be destroyed so
William Duncan cut the rope. The
Indians were not the result of much
make-up they were the genuine ar
ticle, otherwise this part of the story
would have had to be eliminated.
When the rope is cut the bridge
turns turtle, throwing its burden of
over half a dozen men Into the cur
rent beneath. A camera-man wiu
stationed below on a bank of the
stream to catch their fall while an
other stood on a high hill to one side
That is the reason that this fall Is one
of the most thrilling ever filmed.
Pretty Corinne Griffith was unable
to work for the rest of the day after
this perfolous scene had been taken
particularly after the Indians hart
fallen Into the stream, for once or
twice it appeared Impossible for th
rescue party to reach the hist man
who fell from the dangling ropes. In
fact, the entire company suffered
from nervousness for the next two or
three days, so reali.-tie was the fall
of the Indians.
This lis only one of the many gen
uine thrills contained in "The La,:
Man," the picture that has received
excellent criticisms wherever shown
