Milton High School liukitball Team
Moots Athena Tonight in the
School (Jymnanlum Literary Soci
ety Will Hold KcmhIoii Dec. 21.

ATHESJA, Dec. 15. At a meeting
of the Woodmen of the World lodge
held last Wednesday evening officers
were elected and a monster smoker
staged In which a four round boxing
bout between Ernest Boynton and Ed
Scbaaky featured. After the election
of officers and the smoker refresh
ments were served. The following
were elected officers for the ensuing
year: Ed Sebasky, Council Com
mander; Will Shlck, Adviser Lieuten
ant; Elmer Booher, Escort; H. O.
Korthlngton, Banker; Le Roy McCub
blns. Watchman; Cleve Myers, Sentry;
District Manager Hoyt was present
and gave an Interesting talk. Other
visiting members were J. P. Walker
and AI Carden of Pendleton. A class
of 80 will go from Athena on Monday,
December 18 to be Initiated at a meet
ing of the Woodmen at Pendleton on
that evening. The officers elected
at Wednesday's meeting will be In
stalled at the next meeting of the
Athena Woodmen In January.
As a result of a shortage In the sup
ply of books for the Athena school
library from the state. Superintend
ent J. O. Russell of the Athena school
has Just received a shipment of books
valued at over $16. These books
which are mostly on industrial sub
jects have been so selected that there
will be at least three or four out of
the list which will be useful to each
room of the school.

Among the visitors to the grade
rooms this week were: Mrs. 8. 8. Hutt.
Mrs. F. B. Radke, Mrs. T. Taggart and
Oliver Dickinson.
Because of the Christinas program
and Christmas trees to be given on
the school auditorium on Friday. De
cember 22. the second regular meet
ing of the high school literary society
will be held on Thursday, December
21st at 2:30 In the afternoon. A fea
ture of this meeting will be the tryout
debate by the members of the debat
Ing class for places on the Athena
hlKh school debating teams. Two
teams of two members each will b
chosen after this debate which will
alternately represent the local school
at home and away. The teams.
wherever they are, will debate on op
poslte sides of the state question
which Is. "Resolved that Oregon
should adopt a health Insurance law
embodying the essential features of
the Standard Bill for the American
Association for Labor Legislation."
All teams arguing at home will have
the affirmative side of the question.

The members of the cast in the
Athena high school play scored an
other success Saturday evening when
the play was taken to Helix and stag
ed in the Helix opera house under the
auspices of the Helix high school stu
dent body. The opera house was
packed to its fullest capacity and the
local school actors and actresses were
received with great enthusiasm by the
Helix audience. The performance
netted the local student fund a total
of tlS.OIi, the Helix opera house be
ing able to seat but a $45 house.
The grade school teachers and pu
pils are hard at work on their elabo
rate program for Christmas exercises
to be Riven In the school auditorium
on Friday, December 22, and the pu
pils are already becoming 'proficient
in their parts. All parents and patrons
of the school nre Invited to attend
these exercises.
Tonight In the local gymnasium tlje
Athena high school basketball teams,
hmh boys' and girls' will meet the
Milton teams.. Milton last year won
the championship of Umatilla county
in which Pendleton was not represent
ed, and while the Athena girls' won
ftto games from Milton it is reported
that they are eager for revenge this
year.
Pendleton comes here next Friday
night for a double header game and
this game promises to be the besti
game of the season.
The Athena boys met the Pendleton
quintet but one last year and lost by
a score of 26 to 20, but the locals are
considered to have a better working
team lhan ever before and consider
able Interest has already been aroused
over the coming contest. The Athena
girls realize that In the Pendleton sex
tette they have probably the hardest
aggregation to play they will meet
this year and are working hard to get
in shape for the fray.
