The British soldier shown in the rhotograph is occupying an ad vanced observation trench. These trenches are little runways leading directly from the fighting trench to- wart the enemy trenches. They are dug by sappers at the greatest risk and sometimes run into the very cen ter of "no man's land." Dec. 14 The Commercial club held a very in teresting meeting Tuesday night at the Odd Fellows' Hall. About twen tjr memtters were present. They de. cided to hold a wild duck feed and smoker on January J. a report from the committee on the proposed swimming tank was heard from and this committee is going right aheaj to try to secure the lease on the stur- divant land In order to use the wa ter that is necessary for this tank. The business men plan to have this swimming tank for next summer. The business of the next meeting of the Commercial Club will consiM of election of new officers. The Frank Burke Players gave a four act comedy drama, "Within th Law," Tuesday night at Carnes Hall The acting was very good and was enjoyed by a number of people. A larger crowd is expected at the play ing of "Bought and Paid For," on Wednesday night ,tlU Evans returned Tuesday from a trip to Portland, where he shipped several carloads of hogs. John Wells has completed the con struction of a fine house for Kunyan. The new structure is about one halt mile southeast of town. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rankin wore In Pendleton Monday afternoon dolns some Christmas shopping. Pilot Rock at the present time is without electric lights and flash lights of all kinds are being used. The engine of the electric plant broke on Monday and the town will be without lights until a new engine is Installed. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cameron were in town Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bushee are oc. cupying the George Carne house. Dr. Gilleland made a trip up Butter creek Wednesday to attend Mrs. Frank Gilleland. She has been ill for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Dick from Al bee were here Wednesday morning to do some buying. Mrs. John Stevenson was a Pendle. ton shopper Wednesday. Mrs. Earl Rankin spent Wednes day afternoon with her mother, Mrs. Thomas Jaques. Bayard Gilleland was a Pilot Rock visitor Tuesday. ' U H. Roy and his son. Marvin, left Tuesday for a trip to Portland. J,, a Roy will return shortly, but Mar vin will spend Christmas in Portland. Mr, Pollock was a business visitor here Wednesday morning. Mr. Hmil Friend from Seattle will lecture on "Serums" Thursday before the Pilot Rock school. Any outsiders are welcome. Alfred Smith was In from his ranch Wednesday. Daily Chats With the Housewife HREADKD rXKiS. Cook the eggs hard and cut In round thick slices. Pepper and salt them, dip each in beaten raw egg, then in fine bread crumlw, or pow dered cracker crumbs, and fry in nice dripping or butter, hissing hot. Drain off every drop of grease, and serve on a hot dish for breakfast, with the following sauce: Have ready some veal gravy or chicken broth, heat to boiling in a saucepan with a half- teaspoon of chopped parsley, salt and pepper, and lastly three table spoons of cream to a cup of broth. Boi up and pour smoking hot over the eggs. v MARGARET COOKIES. A quarter of a cup of butter, 1 egg, 1-2 cup of sugar, 1-4 cup of cit ron, 1 cup of flour, 1 tablespoon ol boiling water, 1-4 cup of finely chop-i ped baking powder, 1-2 cup of fine ly chopped nut-meats. Cream the butter and add the sugar gradually. Mix and sift flour and baking pow- about 1-2 cup of batter to which add der, and add the remaining ingre- 1-4 cup of cocoa and 1-4 cup of au- dients. Chill, shape, and bake ss gar mixed together. Then take a cookies. In a moderate oven 10-15 teaspoon of this batter and place In minutes. Use one-half of the above the center of the cakes, and bake "Angora braid." and It is used either to make the whole hat, or to form a facing and trimming for a satin hat. It is light in weight, durable, and comes in attractive colorings, MAPEUNE 6IRIT.' Boil together 2 cups of sugar, 2-S of a "cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of "mapellne" until a moderately thick sirup is formed. Remove from the fire and use as needed. This Is a very acceptable substitute for purs mapie sirup. CHIUSTOBEL CAKES. Mix and sift 2 cups of flour and four teaspoons of 'baking powder. Cream 1-2 cup of butter and 1 cup sugar together, add 4 eggs and 1-3 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour and 1-2 cup of milk, alternately. Fill muffin tins half full, reserving recipe for 30 cookies. THE HAT OF ANGORA BRAID. The first hint of a straw hat has appeared on the New York streets during the last few days. Although planned for wear in the south, a few Intrepid women have donned these hats In the metropolis before wear ing them in a warmer clime. They are a distinct novelty, being made of woven braid which resembles a shiny, bright-colored straw with j. fuzzy finish. The material is called about l'-2 hour In a moderate oven. MARY'S POTATOES. To 2 cupa hot mashed or rlced po tatoes, add 2 tablespoons butter, 1-2 teaspoon salt, 1-4 teaspoon pepper, 2 tablespoons of hot milk and l'-4 teaspoon of baking powder. Best well with a fork, then cut and fold in the stiffly beaten whites of 2 eggs. Pile lightly in a casserole, brosh over with a beaten whole egg. Brown in the oven.
