In the opinion of a superior court jury to day which awarded substantial dam ages to a seventeen-year Jold girl plaintiff. In September, 1915. She made no claim for organic in juries. The most unusual appeal that has come to Disfkt Attorney Evuns In many a day was made to him this morning by W. E. Brown of Echo, who begged to be Imprisoned as a last resort in his fight against liquor, says the Portland Journal. "I don't care what you do with me, Just so you lock me up for six months or a year, until I get this stuff out of my system," said Brown. "Send me. to the penitentiary or the insane asylum; any place, Just so I will be restrained. "I have a wife and three children aa fine a family as God ever gave a man and I have been nothing but a disgrace to them for 12 years. I can't leave the booze alone. I've tried and I can't. "I told my wife when I left her 10 days ago that I wouldn't return unt'l I had straightened up and made a man of myself again, I can't do It alone. I've got to have help." Brown, whose home Is In Umatilla county, is 38 years old. His wife Is supporting herself and children by conducting a hotel. In the last U months he said he had sqandered $700 on drink. He said he lost when drunk a traveling salesman's Job which paid him 12200 a year. "The only thing I have made a failure of la this cussed booze," he said. He would drink anything that had a kick In it. He has taken so-called "cures," but they did not last. "I've either got to quit now or completely rum my family and go crazy myself,' he said. District Attorney Evans sent the man to the county Jail this morning and this afternoon is looking into the law to ascertain what action he may take in such a case. Fire Chief Ringold has drawn up the following warning to Pendleton residents: 1 Absolutely prohibit use of candles for illumination of Christ mas. 2 Special attention is necessary to the general scheme of decoration. See that decorative materials are not arranged !n continuous festoons from post to post; require breaks or gaps between series of decorations to pre vent rapid spread of fire. See that all decorative effects are dear of gas drops or chandeliers. Require all electric wiring to be In accordance with the National Elec tric Code. Observe the particular manner In which all wiring Is ar ranged In connection with illuminat ed signs, booths, demonstrations of domestic nppllnnces. etc. Pins and tacks driven through lamp cords cause short circuits resulting in seri ous fires. It is undesirable to use tinsel or other metallic decorations in the im mediate vicinity of lamps as they are liable to work their way Into the tocke's and cause fire from short cir cuiting. Wires used as supports for mer. rhmidlse are Table to hecome alive if attached to lighting fixtures from which current may leak. It Is. therefore. Important that all wires and supports used for this purpose shall be suspended from structures that are mechanically secure and not liable to electrical derangement. It is especially desirable that all temporary wiring In the vicinity of the display shall be mechanically and electrically secure and kept out of reach of the careless or inquisitive. As 'many fires In show window and displavrooms are caused by small defects In the wiring not readily ob served by Inexperienced persons, or from the use of electrically-operated specialties and signs of unapproved designs. It Is very Important thit the Inspection authorities should be fonsulted In respect to the safety of such wiring and devices before anv attempt Is made to operate them electrically.
