A woman who needed an extra waste basket in her home made an odd and attractive one in a few min ute by adapting the round box !n which her new muff had come home. She gave the box a coat of black, shoe polish, and over Its surface she plac ed, at Intervals of two or three Inches, little bunches of gay flower from a package of small transfer pictures brought home by one of her children The picture, when dampened, were easily transferred to the box, aid made a very modern basket for a room where gay colors reigned. SALMAGl'N DA SALAD. In the bottom of small molds, or one large mold,. place a layer of bot tled "penrl onions." Line the sides of the molds with alternate atrip of red and green sweet peppers, or pi mentos, and string beans. Over the pearl onions place a layer of sliced tomatoes, then string beans, then a few cooked peas, with sliced tomatoes on top. Soak 2 tablespoon of gran ulated gelatine in 1-4 cup of cold water, dissolve I 1-4 cup of boiling water, add six tablespoon of lemon Juice bnd 1-2 cup of augar. Mix all well together, and pour over the alad until it comes to the top of the mold Set away in a cold place until well set, chill, then turn out of the molds and serve. Asparagus may be used instead of the beans, and other substitutes may be made If desired. Pare and core 3 apples, then cul Bake In a slow oven for 1-2 hour to In 1-2 cup of water and 1-4 cup of u gar. heated to the simmering point. Shell, blanch and shred 1-4 pound nf almonds. Melt 1-4 cup of butter and tir Into tt 3-4 of a cup of macaroon crumbs, nut and apple in alternate layer In a buttered baking dish, pouring over all any remaining sirup and two tablespoons of orange juice. Boll for 1 1-2 hours, or till sirup be-3-4 of on hour. Peaches or other fruit may be substituted for apples. APRICOT JAM. Made of Dried Fruit. Wash 2 pounds apricot, add 4 quarts boiling water; soak 48 hour Add 6 pounds sugar, 1 1.2 ounces bit ter almonds, blanched and cut up Boil for 1 1-2 haurs, or till sirup be gins to thicken. APPLE SNOW. Put some sliced sponge cakes an 1 macaroons Into a glass dish, soak with lemon Juice and water, usln? Juice of r-2 lemon to l cup water for 6 to s slices cake. Take 1-2 pound of the pulp of roasted or baked apple. 1-2 pound fine white sugar the whites of 2 eggs, and the Juice o! 1 lemon, whip them together to a stiff froth and pour over the cakes. CAVIAR CANAPES. Add 3 tablespoons of lemon Juioi to 6 tablespoons of Russian caviar i Mix well, spread on toast, and gar ntoh with minced watercress or with a atoned olive filled with mayonnaise OYSTER AND GIUPEFRITT SALAD Parboil one and a half pint oyster, drain, cool, and remove tough mu cle. Cut three grapefruit ln halve crosswise, remove pulp, and season with lx tablespoon tomato catsup, four tablespoon grapefruit Juice, on luuicaiiuun Worcestershire sauce, g drop tobasco sauce, and one-half teaspoon salt. Refill grapefruit skins with mixture and garnish with curled celery. CORNED BEKF HASH OMELET. Thi 1 an appetizing dish for break fast. Break Into a bowl four whole eggs, three teaspoonful of milk and one tablespoonful of butter, half s saltspoonful of salt, a pinch of white pepper and a tiny dust of paprika pepper, half a small finely chopped onion that ha been pressed in a cloth, a teanoonful of finely chopped pars ley, and mix all these together with a fork. Then put one and a half ta blespoonful of butter Into an omelet pan, and when it la hot pour In the mixture, lightly move It about with a wooden spoon, and when the mixture thicken roll it over with a knife Into the shape of a half moon and fill it with corner beef hash. In spite of the gloomy outlook for the beet growers during the past two weeks, the season will be one of the best in the northern district, and none of the growers will suffer a fi nancial loss on account of the weath er conditions.
