Mrs. Mansan l Reutinger was acquitted to 4ay by a jury of the murder of her IrwtJsnd, Clstof Beutinger, a well-to- coal merchant whom she shot In fccr home In Caldwell last July. At a pwh,.. trial the jury disagreed. Mrs. Beutinger declared she acted in self defense. After thanking the jurors Mrs. Beutinger hurried acrass the courtroom to her five childrea. from whom she had been separated duing the trial, embracing and kiss ing them. There is still about two inches o! snow on the ground from the blizzard of last Tuesday afternoon. The snow and freeze of that time stopped all seeding. It is very doubt. fu if there Is any further fall seedinj here, even if the weather should mod erate. The result will be that moit of next year's crop will be from spring sowing as comparatively lltte seeding has been done this full on ac count of the late harvest and unusutl weather conditions. Harry Bickers was here yesterday adjusting the loss of the Elder house which was recently burned. Eugene Smith returned to Seattle Friday evening after a week's visit here. Mr. Smith was looking after his farm interests near Butter creek. Mr. and Mrs. John Jordan returnel Friday from a week's visit to Arling ton and Heppner. C. R. Blackman came down from Pendleton Sunday and will spend this week at the Saylor farm where he is feeding several hundred head of cattle.' J. B. Saylor returned Saturday u his Freewater home after a few days spent on his Butter creek farm. Sheriff T D. Taylor and Deputy Estea were in Echo yesterday. Mrs. S. J. Two suits in which the United States is suing the Yakima Valley transportation company, owned of the street car lines, were commenced In federal court to recover I111S.T3. which the government alleges the company failed to pay as a corpora tion tax on Its net income for 1910 and 1911. The company's auditor says the difference is entirely one of methods of accounting. The auditor says the tax paid was correct, ac cording to reports made as required by the interstate commerce commis sion, but that the internal revenue collector claims the interest account should be differently handled. When at 6:30 a. in. today the fed eral court jurymen, who last night took the case of J. CTouch & Son against A. W. Hinkle. had failed to agree Judge Rudkin called the jury men into court and reprimanded them for their failure to agree on so sim ple a matter. If it had been musk or Jockey club the detective would have walked by. But it wasn't. It was something with a long name and a $10 smell. A Sherlock nose went Into the air. Business of sniff ing. And with the further result that William Anderson, the negro porter of the drug store, Is waiting an opportunity to explain to the court Just how he happened to have about 160 worth of perfumes, much perfumed soap, sev eral new safety razors and other things in his trunk at his home, 1917 Twenty-second avenue. The detec. live says these toilet articles were stolen from the drug store. Anderson's arrest resulted because he "Just couldn't keep away from wearing perfume." The detective hired by the drug store to determine the cause for the disappearance of the perfume stock caught a whiff of Anderson one day and then "matched him up" by smelling the various per fumes in stock.
