The ex aminations have been accom panied by mapping of the sreas of hydrocarbon shales and by such field measure ments of the thickness of the shales in workable beds and such rude field distillation tests as will afford primary infor mation concerning the amount and richess of the shales in different parts of the region. Very rough but cautious cal culations of the contents of the shale in parts of the area ex amined indicate that the distil lation of shale from beds over 3 feet thick in Colorado alone will yield more than 20,000, 000 barrels of crude oil, from which more than 2,000,000,000 barrels of gasoline can be ex tracted by ordinary methods. A report giving the results of these explorations and tests and an account of experiments r.s to possible gasoline produc tion, both by the ordinary com mercial processes and by the Rittman process, is now in press. A PAMPERED DIET SQUAD -JpHE Chicago diet squad y closed with a total gain in weieht of thirtv five pounds its two weeks' food test at a daily cost of 40 cents each. Why not? The sauad was pampered. Its last breakfast of oranges, rolled oats with dates, French toast, bacon, bread, butter and coffee was ambrosia beside the oaten scones with which old Scotland nourished a fine race. BY MANIPULATION "Yf N many respects a change in the premiership in Eng land is equivalent to , a change in the presidency in America. The prime minister is tie real executive of the em pire, tje king being king in name only. .Hut when Asquith retired as "premier and the honor fell to Lloyd George it was not by vlcctSoa, but by the manipula tion of a few men, Lloyd ' George ar.d several other mem 'rs of th() coalition cabinet threatened to resign unless As- "quit& riiired. The prime min- idler's position was such that Yin had to quit. .Asquith's forced resignation may "have been wan-anted or it may hive been rank injustice, 'it mtj have been due to a tory ?pkjt or it may have been the Aork of men having the high t interests of Britain at heart anil knowing well what the sit-: nation tailed for. But what of a system that al lows a few men to hold! such power within their hands? Think of the possibilities in volved in such control ; of the manipulation and chicanery in vited by such an arrangement. If during the critical time in tur affairs several members of the president's cabinet had threatened to resign unless the president did so and allow them to name his successor the ac tion would have been similar to . -what lias transpired in Eng. land. Needless to say it is a line of action our people would not tolerate. ---- GASOLINE FROM A NEW SOURCE dinner of soup, roast loin of pork, cranberry sauce", sweet potatoes, escp.lloped onions, tread, butter, rice pudding and tea was little like the cornmeal cob and kernel ground together that S. B. Chittenden found in a dead Confederate's haver sack at Monocacy food which sustained the fighting men who nearly raided the capital. The squad were adults ot both sexes at light labor. While $2.80 each may seem little for their food, it equals $14 a week for a family of five. Buy ing and cooking at less advan tage, the average working man's family cannot pay $14 a week for its food alone; far from it Everybody knew that at a sufficient price good food can be prepared with intelligent stewardship. Like so many such experiments, the diet squad established nothing of social value. New York World. Fifty per cent of the escaped prisoners have already been caught and if our sheriff has his usual success it will not be many days until the rest of the quartet return to their old home.'
