John Wynn, well known McKay creek farmer, was in town yesterday cn a business trip. P. . D. Tull, Spokane capitalist who is putting up an apartment house here, is in the city. Mrs. Will M. Peterson and baby went over to Walla Walla this morn ing to visit relatives. Lester Barr, formerly with the O. W. R & X Co., here, has been made operator at the depot Stanley G. Jewett of the biological survey is in Portland attending the convention of sportsmen. Miss Nell Thlelsen of Salem and Mrs. G. T. McClean of Astoria are registered at the Pendleton. Mrs. H. B. Bam E Van Vactor, prominent Heppner attorney who delivered the memorial address of the La Grande Elks Sunday, spent last night in Pendleton. "My salary was 125 a week and m yliving expens es were $5000 a month." This was the excuse Adolph Loeffl er, a young Austrian who for six years has been employed in the ex port department of Francis H. Leggett & Co., gave yestedway for thefts ex tending over two years and totaling according to Loeffler's confession, al most $100,000. For the last two months Loeffler has been living in an eight room apartment for which he pair $150 a month. He kept several servants, in cluding a chauffeur, to drive his six cylinder automobile. WASHINGTON. Dec. 5. Cows do not give good milk or much milk when rifle shots are cracking about them, said Paymaster Ryan, describ ing his efforts to cut expenses at the middies setiool by operating a dairy farm. "Target practice held on a range near our dairy had the effect of mak ing our cows nervous and conse quently their milk production is not as good as it should be," he said. To make it more backward supper was served at the first of the evening. Tooth picks were served first, then cookies, and then came the jello, and last came pickles and fried potatoes. The boys were served first, and they had to sit with their backs to the partners which they had chosen. Af ter supper was over games were played. They played games such as riding in an airship, spelling back ward. AccormnK to figures made public by President Barrow today, Urban Shocker, the young Yankee pitcher farmed out most of last season to Toronto, leads he International League in pitching. Shocker led under the earned run system with an average of 1.31. In won and lost he also was the victor, having fifteen victories and three de feats.
