WILSON'S MESSAGE BRIEF.
Advises Congress at to New Legisla
tion In 2000 Words.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1. Presi
dent Wilson's annual message to
Congress, now in the printer's hands,
contains about 2000 words, and is
among the shortest documents of Its
kind on record. It points out that
the reports of government depart
ments will be made before congress
separately, and that, therefore, their
details are not discussed.
The president emphasizes the un
completed legislation on railroads,
suggested by him at the last session
to meet the threatened strike, as the
most pressing problem facing con
gress. He then goes on to a general
discussion of other domestic problems.

HHRMISTON, Dec. 1. Thanksgiv
ing Day in Hermlston was entirely
devoted to the entertainment of
friends and out of town relatives
with feasts and merrymaking attend
ant upon this big holiday.
Mr. and Mrs. F. C. McKenzle had
as their guests, Mrs. McKenasie's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. George O'Dan
iel, of Pendleton.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Alexander, Mr.
and Mrs. H. W. Collins and Mr. Roy
Alexander of Pendleton were guests
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
P. Dodd.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. McDonald en
tertained the original Unger-longer
Club of the Columbia district at din
ner. Their guests were Mr. and
Mrs. F. P. Phlpps, Mr. and Mrs. W.

Boardman to spend Thanksgiving at
the home of Mrs, Voyen's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Phelps.
John F. Relhl, of Seattle, has ar
rived for a few days' visit at the
home of his mother, Mrs. Charlotte
Relhl.
Mr. and Mrs. G. Hansen came down
from Pendleton Wednesday night and
are guests at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. A. S. Anderson.
Mrs Frances Taylor, mother of
Mrs. J. W. (Don) Campbell, has re
turned to the city after having spent
a tow weeks In Spokane.

UMAPINE RANCHERS ARE
EAGER FOR BRANCH LINE
Enthusiastic Mass Meeting
Held in Grange Hall Fri

UMAPINE, Ore., Nov. SO. That
the ranchers of the Hudson Bay vi
cinity are enthusiastic over the pros
pects of a branch line of the O.-W.
R. A N. Co., to be built by the above
company from Barrett siding to this
place was manifested last Friday aft
ernoon when the mass meeting of
about 75 representative farmers met
in the Grange hall. R. H. Wellman
was chosen chairman of the meeting
and R, E, Bean secretary-treasurer.
Speeches were made by R. H. Well
man, John Kelly, R. E. Bean, and
others enumerating the many advan
tages of a branch line to this district
All ' the farmers present gave the
amount of tonnage raised by each
together with the number of livestock
fuel, etc., used each year, when the
entire data has been secured the
secretary will compile the aggregate
and the figures will be presented to
the officials of the railroad for ac

BALTIMORE, Nov. 30. Mrs. Le
na Keble came to Baltimore from
Indianapolis and asked a policeman
to direct her to the office of the
North German Lloyd Steamship Co
She said she wanted to return to
Germany to live on her savings.
She was taken back when told that
there were no steamers sailing to
Germany and asked the reason.
"On account of the war," she was
told.
"What war?" she asked.
Miss Keble explained that for the
17 years she has been In this coun
try she had lived with a family in
Indianapolis who paid her 2 a
month and kept all reading matter
from her. She saved $402. she will
go Into service here at a more mod
ern wage.
