That there is an effort to flood Oregon with li quor before January 1 is the belief of the Albany police based on the ar. rest of two men here last night each driving a car of whiskey from Horn brook, Cal., to Portland. One of them got away and continued on to Port land. At 11:45 o'clock last night Chief ot Police John Catlln and officer 8. c. Worrell found J. J. Hammel and H. E. Hawkins, of Portland, at the Ore gon restaurant taking a bite continuing on their Journey. before Their cars stood at the curb outside loaded with liquor. The men were placed under arerst. When Hammel got to the police station he was going at a good rate of speed and he gave Officer Worrell a shove which put him off the car. Worrell emptied his revolver into the car. Hammel hit for the Salem road at a high rate of speed and at 1 o'clock the Salem police reported that the mad had Just gone through that city at about 60 miles an hour and could not be stopped. Hawkins was taken before Judge F. B. Van Tassel acting in the ab sence of Recorder L a. Lewelllng and allowed to go until J o'clock this I I 4 I i The Children Will Want It. The ChUdren Will Enjoy It. morning when he will face trial. His car is in the possession of the police and the 280 quarts of liquor which he -was carrying are stored In police headquarters. Hammel is believed to have had as much as both drove St ude baker cars and carried full loads. If Ham mel is arrested In Portland he will be brought back to face trial along with Hawkins and C. Burris and Charles Dllg, who were arrested early Wednesday morning with 10 cases of liquor in their possession. The men will be tried under a city ordinance which prohibits the carry ing of liquor through the streets un less it Is In original packages. The penalty Is confiscation of the liquor and a fine of from (10 to $100 or five to 50 days In Jail. The cases against BurrU and Dllg are still before the grand Jury, Because Hammel ran away and left Hawkins here the latter Is highly in censed. He gave the police his ad dress and other information about him. Hawkins states that "boose" is coming into the state in a stream and that the road is lined with autot going both ways between Portland and Hornbrook. Burris and Dllg have retained local attorneys to defend them In their pre liminary hearing which comes up to morrow morning. Local officers have doubled their watch and are lying in wait for other shipments that are expected to come through here. wnpu wiflL 1 1 mi. .i i hi Not having Intended a long trip, they were not clad to endure the rig ors to which they became exposed. Besides a biting wind the waters ol the bay were rough and 'the small power boat was almost constantly awash. Dodd, especially suffered, for he several times went overboard in efforts to push the boat into free wa ter. Both Dodd and Searle are Man hattan business men. When Searle returned; from business and found his wife absent and learned over the tel. ephone that the Dodds had not re turned, he set out alone In his own power boat He cruised about the bar until the next afternoon before he was rewarded. He found the Dodd boat, with his wife and his friends huddled in the bottom and very near exhaustion, on the shoals of Whig Inlet Last night it was reported that all the part) (were recovering from their long ex posure. Burger, New York, T. M. C. A. 'It appeals to me strongly. It has two particularly strong points In my opinion; It takes boys upon the per fectly ' natural grouping, and then leaves more than the usual plan to the Initiative of the boys themselves." A. B.
