SOME ARTISTS DESERVE
ARREST, SAYS MR. BRUSH
Many Modern Paintings Would Have
Been Suppressed Ten Tearfe
Ago, He Declares.
PITTSBURG, Dec 1. "Artists are
producing canvasses today for which
they ought to be arrested. ' Ten years
ago if an effort had been made to ex
hiblt some paintings being shown to
day the police would have been call
ed in. Real art is on the wane: it
has become so enmeshed in the mad
whirl and swirl of modern times that
true artistic sence Is deadened."
That, in substance, is the opinion
expressed today by George De For
est Brush, one of the foremost artists
of today who is honor guest tonight at
a reception by the department of fine
arts of Carnegie Institute in the gal
leries of the institute. I
Today real artists are few and far
between, Mr. Brush declared. Peo
ple are rapidly losing their apprecia
tion of the artistic and almost every
thing is machine made.

as It was the year before. Some of
the original creators of the various
