U Mais Strat Telephone Gtl Charles Peterson, an inmate of the state ho p tnl who was killed by Can iette Lareso, another inmate Saturday morning, was a well known character In Ia Grande. Concerning the af fair the La Grande Observer has the following Mory: The death of Mr. Peterson at Pen dleton today brings to an end a most unique career. Peterson first got in to the local public limelight on a wide scale Just before March 28. 1913. when he was arrested, indicted and convicted on a charge of stealing meat. Peterson lived the life of a hermit In the vicinity of Ladd canyon, and It was charged that he stole meat from neighbors to replenish his own crude storehouse. During the time he lived there in deep seclusion he excited much curiosity. After his conviction Attorney C. A Small, ap pointed by the court to look after his nterests, fecured a stny In punish, ment on the Insanity plea. He wits examined and sent to the hospital. His father p. O. Peterson lived In Kearney. Neb., at that time. Ill record doveloDed at the time nWnwm IV.. It hail I exhibited eccentricities in other states. In California he stole some meat un der like circumstances, and again -n another Oregon county did likewise. During the month or so he domiciled himself about Hot Lake he cut ci rers with nightly murtbaths, and lived in extreme squalor. After his com mitment to Pendleton he escaped FOREST NOTES. Ditrng the forest fire season. For. est Service lookout men stationed on high peaks, look over practically all the national forest land in the state of Oregon. The forest service cooperates with sixty stock-growers associations . In t Oregon and Washington for the pur pose of bettering stock and range con ditions on the national i or est ranges of the two states. Special use permits for 75 sumer homesites on the national forests of Oregon, Washington and Alaska have been issued since January 1. 1916. The timber and grazing resources i" the national forests of Oregon, Wash ington and Alaska have an estimated value of 1233.000.000. The national forests contain the most extensive public playgrounds in the world, and are open to the free use of the public. Ughtnlng caused J 1-2 per cent of the 1091 forest fires suppressed by the forest service in Oregon, Wash ington and Alaska during the seaso.t of 1918.
