When his father died In tho late 'MJ8 and left him a large estate. Dement whs one of the most promising young lawyers in the Hate. Then fortune smiled at him. I.uur he entered upun a career that caused his downfall. ' Dement was born in Oregon City July 27, 1856, He was named after Ralph Wilcox, the first school teacher In Portland. He was educated In the j public schools of San Francisco and i graduated from Columbia University, Washington, D. C. In 1875. Two ' years later he received a degree from t the law department of the same col- lege. After two years in the federal service he came back to Oregon, !
