Between 14,000,000 and 15,000.000 high school cadets over the age of 14 years of age throughout the country furnished with uniforms by the war depart ment aa soon as congress appropriates gunds for the purpose. This will be the first time the government has fur. nisheil these uniforms, and is In ac cordance with the provisions of the national defense act passed last ses sion. The quartermasters' depart ment of the army has already made a p its estimates for th ensuing year. The defense act forbids the use of the military uniform of the army ex cept by recognized cadet corps, over wh:ch the secretary of war has as signed a regular army officer as In. structor. There are nearly 7,000,009 boys over 14 In the cadet corps of the public hU;h schools, and It is estimat ed that nearly as many more are In private schools, who will apply for regulation outfits. The act requ'res the government to furnish uniforms for all these. None of the money for th's equip ment haa yet been appropriated by congress, but It is expected that a sufficient sum will be set aside to meet the estimates of th!s expense furnished by the secretary of war when he goes before the appropria tions committee In December.
