In the new of the East Ore gonian the Wilson election te a tribute to the common sense of the American people and shows their appreciation of an administration that has served them with ability and-sincerity but by doing so has engen dered the hostility of power ful interests that resent theif inability to dominate the gov ernment as in days of the past. Beyond this is the fact the American people refuse to change leaders when grave in ternafional complications are at hand. The verdict is against war with Mexico and it is deeD- ly impressive that all the states adjacent to Mexico s border are in the Wilson column, even to New Mexico, a republican; state. The outcome of the elec-j tion upholds the president in his neutral course toward the European war and means a continuance of our diplomatic relations along the lines mat have worked so successfully during the past two years. BY THE WEST AND SOUTH 3 RESIDENT WILSON has 2s been reelected by the " votes of the west and south, sections devoted chiefly to the industry of agriculture, while the Hughes vote was confined chiefly to the north Atlantic and New England states where manufacturing holds sway. There is significaiKe in this and it is complimentary to Wilson, particularly with re spects to his support in the west. The west is more free than any other section from the old traditions. The peo ple are inclined to progres sivism and freedom of thought along political lines. In most of the western states the wom en vote. Being free .from the grinding necessities and fears that prevail in the eastern manufacturing centers the bus inessmen and workmen as well as the farmers cannot be held in line by ghosts and bogies conjured up for campaign pur poses. Above and over all looms the fact that the day is past when either political party needs to stand hat in hand and ask either Boss Barnes or Boss Murphy what kind of a presi dential candidate to name or what sort of a platform to ad opt. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to elect a president without getting the sanction of New York or even of Indiana and Illinois. The west and south are in the saddle and the people "down east" who think they are all wise and that all the country this side the Hudson is a hinterland will have to ad just themselves to a new situ ation. 4 4-44 A WORTHWHILE FIGHT T& HOUGH the Pendleton normal measure was de feated it was a most worthy fight because made from the best of motives and in behalf of a cause that all good citizens would champion if they knew the full facts. The measure would have carried had it not been for the adverse votes in certain counties, par ticularly in western Oregon, wnere there has been more or less depression for several years. Eventually a normal school will be established in eastern Orecron and it will bp located in Pendleton. The East Oregonian gave money and energy to the nor mal school campaign. It has not the slightest complaint to make from a local standpoint. The real loss falls not locally but upon the schools of the state particularly in the rural sections. In time the people will realize the situation and act accordingly. When thi't time comes, if it is the wish of the people that the school be located in the logical and mott advantageous place the gates of Pendleton will be open to this institution and a progres sive minded, hospitable people will stand ready to do the fair thing in every respect Eastern . Oregon counties with but one or two exceptions were in the Wilson column and considering the partisan regis trations Umatilla county people made the most remarkable showing of all. If the rest of the state had but followed the eastern Oregon spirit our com monwealth would have a place in the sun instead of in the shadow. :::::n 28 Years Ago Today (From the 'Daily East Oregonian.
