Let a woman once realise the pos sibilities of wall psjMJf and she may employ many pleasant hours uml many proiitabje ones in its use. A person can often handle pasteboard and wall paper: fuahtoniug articles from them, when eyes will not admit of sewing or painting, and when ; weakened body la unable to endure the fatigue from being on one's feet. lr the invalid will observe the vari ous wall pockets and the many waste paper baskets, she will find modal. for her work. Alter the cloth has dried thoroughly, not before, let the wall paper be put on More than one pattern of paper My be used on a single article. There is much scope for individual taste In this matter. It will be surprising how many kinds of receptacles one can make la this manner. A variety or wall paper may Ik- secure l from houses that send out large samples at small prices. In this way an invalid can spend many pleas ant hours, and useful ones, tor she can supply her friends with attrac tive waste-paper baskets and various' pretty receptacles for the wall. oi.i-fsihonf:u iikkkstkak pik First prepare seasoning of three parts fajt and one part black pepper with just a dash of ground nutmeg; next take tender steak enough to fill the dish; cut this up in thin slices Now take each slice, sprinkle it with just enough of the aboVe seasoning! to season It (not too high, then), sprinkle it with chopped parsley. Now wash the top with eggs and make it in a moderate heat; as soon as it boils, and has boiled j about 10 minutes, one whole should1 be cooked. By adopting this plan the meat will be tender and gravy much richer than by the pan of parboil ing the meat prior to baking; the point to observe being not to bake it too quick. EVERYDAY HFUJ'S. To fulfill tlio proper portrayal of a character one must primari ly look the part- In order to actually look the part one can hnrdly expect to obtain the best results by driving up to Cohen's or any other coal inner In an endeavor to liny something as near like the original as possible. The real effect can only be ob tained by securing the origi nal. This is not always an easy matter, and often requires a little time and patience, to say nothing of diplomatic prowess. For Instance, In searching for the actual wardrobe of an Italian grave-digger for my characterization in "The "Allen," It took me quite a little time and necessitated the assistance of a bootblack as inter preter before I obtained what I was after. By buying a coat from one laltorer, a pair of shoes from another, a hat and over alls from still another, together with such Incidentals which were nevertheless essential as an immense nnd unique Jack knife and a soiled bandana handknrFhlef, I finally had my outfit for the character. Instead of calling on the cOstnmer's for my material I went right, among the laborers working on an exca vation. It was no easy matter to convince tbe laborers that I was perfectly MUM, and when they finally did realize this, the price for their respective garments soared above pur. Ilowever, the result readily warranted my trials and tribulations In this direction, as will be attested by many thousands who have seen this photoplay. As to facial make-up for tbe camera, I do not believe In It except where it Is absolutely necessary. When my parts de mand a sunburned complexion, I go out Into the fields and let nature do It, If this Is iossllle. If a shaggy beard is necessary I forget to shave for a few days. Bumming up the entire ques tion of make-up for the screen, the same rules that govern u- cess In real life apply, namely: Be natural and avoid 'the art! i hi as much as possible. POUTluVND, Sept. S. "For the Southern Paetfta company to throattie the business of western Oregon with a car shortage Is a shame," said Prank J. littler, chairman of the Ore gon public service commission, when he was in Portland Thursday. "We have made careful Inquiry In California, Idaho, Washington, .Ne vada and AriJona." continued Mr. Miller, "and there is no car shortage in any of them. Yet the Southern Pacific operates In all but Idaho. The company is simply neglecting Oregon. Over) month In the year the com pany has about 600 more cars going south than come north. So If Oregon shippers are to be taken j-are of emp ty cars must be hauled north lot them to load. The railroad com pany does not want to do this. It can make more money by keeping its cars In California. Discrimination is Alleged. "But the railroad company has no right to discriminate against Oregon In thai way. The company is under a legal and moral onllgatlon to take care of the district it undertakes to serve.' The company came Into this territory voluntarily. Communities have been built up under the Implied promise from the railroad eompaif that i1 Industries were developed it would provide facilities for getting thu product! to market. "The company is not living up to its obligations. It is not treating the people of the state fairly. And the worst sufferers will be the laboring men. because hundreds of them will be Ihrwwn out of employment by the enforced shutting down of mills and factories unless Immediate relief is given. "If the company treated the peo ple of the state In the spirit it should it would have no grounds for com plaint of antagonism or the people. Ituud's lollc) ScHrel. The company complains because it says it is not making enough profit i n its Investment The reason It is not making mute is because it does not have the rolling stock to handle i he businnw that is being offered. IU greatest investment is in tracks, de posits, bridges and tunnels If it would Invest a little more in cars it would be able to earn a bigger rate oi interest un its entire investment and a tremendous rate of Interest on Its additional investment in cars." The shortage Is growing more acute every day. And disaster is folluwlng ii. its wake The lumber industry' has been the hardest hit, but now the shortage is menacing practically all other industries In the western part of the state. Iteports from the Southern Pacific to tne public service commission placed the shortage yes terday at 1250 cars. Mr. Miller said tne commission is doing everything in rts power to get the railroad company to come to the lellef of the shippers and he thought be saw a ray of hope aheo,d. nulling stock inadequate, He pointed out that the Southern Pacific has less rolling stock per op erating mile than any other trans continental railroad reaching the Pa cific coast. The Southern Pacific has about 'ev en cars per mile of road, while other lines reaching the Pacific coast have as higii as 14 cars per mile, Mr. Mil ler said. Considering that the com pany is operating about 41,000 miles of road, the I00D curs it is reported to have ordered wil iosj but a drop in the bucket. "The farmer, the fruit grower and the live tock men are all being hit as well as the lumbermen." said Mr. Miller. "The Industrial life of the state is being almost paralyzed." The Southern Pacific company re ported that It received at Ashland to day 36 cars with which- to help re lleve the car shortage. of these. thrf-e were open, under load; ly were open empties and l-i closed empties. Reported on hiind today were 1H Closed cars under load and awaiting delivery, 6d open cars, also under load, making a total, including thosi received at Ashland, of 287.
