The market for wheat was a mass
of excitement. Considering the extra
ordinary murkets abroad the feeling
here may he considered conservative.
The fretuht situation was probably
the factor that kept the loeiil trade
from showing a runaway feeling in
wheat.
There was the greatest foreign de
mand known In yearn shown In all
American wheat markets during the
Wck. While BJngUoh Interests were
nol the chief operators because, of
their efforts to depress the trade, the
continent was a buyer of everything
available at American and Canadian
centers.
Foreign crops are Jusl about as had
been forecast In these reports during
HOtnt week- the worst In yeari
and Just now English Interests are
grudgingly admitting what the unpre
judiced ones have known for a long
time. The Kngllsh are Inclined to hit
the market every time they get u
chance, but to some exnten the ex
treme price that Kngland must pay
for Its breadstuffs is due to the poor
working of the Kngllsh shin combine.
Crop conditions In t'anada are nat
urally attracting much attention from
the world's trade. The crop there irt
badly damaged there l not the
slightest doubt of thai: bin the ex
tent of the damage Is not yet known
and until It is there will be much un
certainty regarding the future of val
ues, In the meantime the Pacific north
west la completing the harvesting of
one of Ita biggest crops and M fur as
i.ualltv Is concerned. Ita bent wheat
crop.
Heavy demand for barley from
abroad created a sensational price sit
uation in the 1'uciflc northwest as
well as In the California trude during
the week. Price advances were the
keenest of the season to date and the
buying at the advances was extremely
liberal. Yesterday It was announced
that one ship had been chartered to
carry barley to the t'nited Kingdom
from Nan Francisco.
Data market was also a very firm
trad during the week, with closing
bids on the Merchants Exchange $1 a
ton higher than OB Monday.

The hog market, erratic as It was
during the week, was merely a reflec
tion of supply and demand.
At the start of the week il looked
as If hog supplies would not be heavy
and there was a sharp advance In the
price, which carried the extreme top
to $9.90. Then receipts became very
liberal; the trade was si. mow hat over
stocked and the natural thing hap
pened. Pricca were first cut 2c In
the morning trade, and later In the
day the bulk of the toppers went
down another 25c. Then on Saturday
there was a small run and the market
recovered the quarter loss.

Wheat in Interior
with price condition and business In
the pacific northwest when hog values
drop so much below the eastern par
ity. Prices In the tidewater markets
of ihe coast are so low that all of
the real good stuff frm Idaho Is be
ing routed to central west markets.
This is no fault of the loca packers
because they are at the, moment help
less. There are more hogs available
for the rnurket than they cun take
care of, and that's about all there is
to the situation.

Quality considered, the market for
cuttle may safely be considered frac
funnily higher for the week at North
Portland. There was a smaller run
during the week, and especially so on
.Monday, which Is always the big
marketing day of the week.
While no sales In the cattle divis
ion were made above $7 during the
week, the stuff that brought this
amount wiis not worth perhaps more
than 16.801 6.85 during the previous
week. The atuff thut brought 17 dur
ing the previous week was nbsent
from the trade, during the lust six
days.
Cattle supplies In the Interior are
limited, and It would not therefore be
surprising If values stiffened up some
what within the Immedate future.

week, the market for mutton and
lambs was firmer at North Portland.
Another slight decrease in offerings

buying of top lambs centered around

The outlook for the immediate fu
ture seems extremely favorable so
far as the local market Is concerned.

mental school for students, and asking
