Aug. 12 A second lieuten ancy in the I'nited States army is open, by competitive examination, to all graduates of the Oregon Agricul tural I'ollege who are not over 27 years o! age. Examinations, accord ing to an order issued August 3 from the war department, will be held on August 21 at some point in the Pa cific northwest to be subsequently designated by the adjutant general ot! the army, Washington. D. C, to' whom application should be made at j once. Both a mental and a physical examination will be requisite to ap ! pointment, the mental examination j Deluding elementary French, tier-1 man or Spanish, general history, ele mentarv surveying, and a choice ot advanced work in English, modern ' languages, analytical geometry, val cuius, military art and field engineer ing or advanced surveying. The order from the war department explains that, "About 1500 vacancies now cxi--t in the grade of second lieu tenant," and declares that, "Under ex isting laws many Ot the officer ap pointed to these vacancies will be promoted to the grade ot first lieu tenant in the near future." The op portunity, therefore, is tikei) to prove ver attractive to graduates of the Oregon Agricultural College aud oth er land-grant colleges who aspire to military serv.ee as officer in the reg ular army. Specific inlormalion concerning the general character of the examina tions may be obtained from any mili tary post or from the office ol the commandant of cadets at the Oregon Agricultural College. The first step lor all applicants to take is to get in to communication with the adjutant general of the army at Washington, who will rurnish the necessary blanks for applying for examination, will designate the place of the exam ination and give the necessary direc tions for securing testimonials as to to character and fitness for appointment.
