While there were intervals recently when the market Linked as if It would do better, this was shown only when there was Bathing la sight to test quotations. As long as retail trade conditions in the I'aolflc northwest are as poor as at present, then- is not likely to be much improvement In the cattle situ ation. Prevailing cattle prices, while somewhat lower than what had been previously paid here are still high as compared with what is usually paid when local grangers come forward The movement of grass stuff is now on, and plentiful supplies are antici pated for the immediate future, al though there was only a handful stuff in over night General cattle market range: Prime light steers 7.00?i 7.25 Prime heavy steers 7.50 Good light steers 6.0036.25 Stockers and feeders .... 5.00&5.5U Primo dehorned COOT ... ' 'j tiing prices for September and Le cember grain were fractionally un der, but In the first hour a slight recovery was posted. It was evident that foreigners are taking American wheat on a more liberal basis, and it is a well known fact that their re quirements are large. While there was some substantial selling In the opening se-sion, it was evident that some of the most conservative houses were accumulating on the slight re cessions. Corn, as usual, followed the course established by wheat. Scattered rains in the corn belt gave an easier tone to the market, but there was no deny- Iny that a great many respons.ble traders are friendly to the cereal,, even at present prices. Oats were almost without feature. Trading was on a limited scale and prices did nothing of interest. Thej market held well under hedging pre-; sure. SAX FRANCISCO. Si am ca o X U (Note- -This is the second of a series of golf articles written especially f r the Bast Oregonlan by George H. Kd dy. professional of the Pendleton Golf Club.) Selection of Clubs. There are a food many people who take up golf. They go in a store and select I set of clubs or send away and m from some department store is still worse. This is a great mistake. It's alright if they know what is suited to their style of play, but a new beginner does not know what Is best for him. This is one reason why a good man) make such slow progress in the name. They go on trying to play with cltjbs .which are not at all suited to them, thus trying to adapt a stvle to suit the club. What must be done is to net a club which suits the stjle of play. My experience is. the De TV beginner should go oul on the links and employ the professional and try several clubs and take a lesson or two, before selecting i his clubs and let the professional do (this for him. for this reason he wants to see the new beginner come on quick with his game. Consequently he will I do his best and get the clubs which will lw suited to the player. An old .experienced player can always tell on 'seeing a person come on the link ! whether he has been started out right I He can usually tell by his clubs, i A good poller as a rule always likes to see his clubs clean and condition. It has been I times that a person con el'.ilis. It hell ball. regard to selecting dubs I venture to say there are SO per cent if golfers who haven't the clubs that si.it their style of play. The selecting of clubs is a Cery difficult matter. It takes ver close study and years ol 'experience. To prove this 1 will leave it to some of our older players. They found after two or three years they had to Changs their clubs owing to not having some one to start t'.iem out With the right clubs. A player having found out the right lie of his club, one which is most suited to his stanoa, must now get the weight Then arc a good many who try to pig with clubs which are far too heavy for them, consequently they arc forever missing their swing. It is bet-1 tei to play with a club which Is too , light. It will be noticed thai all the! best crack players use light clubs., the driver usually not more than from H to it ounces. The clubs IhOWld vary according; to a person's. Weight and length of swing. The longer the -wing the lighter the club must be otherwise he will find it ' very difficult to time his stroke. There are good many who use the I long swiii).' 11 seems moM) natural ; to them There are others who adopt the t h roe-quarter swing and can use a heavier club than the for- ; mer. Sometimes it will be seen on the links a small man with a heavier club than a big niati. That is be- j cause the latter has a much longer!
