Exposition juries at San Francisco and San Diego gave highest competitive awards to Zeroiene an oil from Western crude. Zeroiene is the best oil for your motor because scientifically refined from selected California crude asphalt-base. Government experts tell us that oils correctly refined from asphalt-base crude "distill without decomposition" do not break up and lose their lubricating value under cylinder heat and are "much better adapted to motor cylinders, as far as their carbon-forming proclivities are con cerned, than are paraffine-base Pennsylvania oils." When you empty the crank-case refill with Zero iene. Dealers everywhere and at service stations and agencies of the Standard Oil Company. A western woman doctor declares hut women are physically fit for ser vice at the battle front. Probably some exceptional women may be, but are not the majority prone to ail ments which make even household cares a burden? Hence the necessity for that great remedy which during forty years has done more than any other to relieve sucn ailments and mitigate the suffering of American women Lydia E. Plnkham's Vege table Compound.-- Adv. Ml! CAMPO SANTO, GENOA, ITALY The Most Beautiful Burial Place in the World. FUNERAL matters are difficult to write of. In no department of human affair does taste rule more tyranically; and the taste is often very bad. Still the subject is one we all have to consider. It, is also a thing upon which the community as well as the individual has something to say. The common practice in the United States is to bury the dead in the earth. About all that can be said for this is, that it is consecrated by custom. It is certainly unsanitary, and it ought not appeal to the cultured imagination. A movement is now on foot to substitute the mausoleum for the grave, in stead of placing the dead in the earth, they are to be put in crypts in a permanent building, especially erected for that purpose. The custom of earth burial did not come into general use until the fourth and fifth centuries. The problem of finding land suitable for burial, especially in the case of growing cities, is becoming more and more difficult. The growth of cities has caused many a burying ground to be abandoned. It would seem, therefore, that the erection of community mausoleums should appeal to people. There the dead can be laid away in a beautiful house, endowed in perpetuity, a housing practically indestructible. The mausoleums of the ancients, many of them, still stand. Strict scientifically sanitary provisions being taken, such houses need never be come a health menace. THE SANITARY COMMUNITY MAUSOLEUM, invites attention as the best. Heartful. cheerful, healthful, hopeful. It destroys not, endangers not, impover ishes not. It is queenly, kingly, princely sentiment, fit for home royalty. Sentiment is respect. Those who have seen the remarkable Campo Santo at Genoa will not fear that respect for the departed will be lowered by this innovaiton. Providing Mausoleum protection is not preparing to die. Life and property mean death and taxes. Because these are unpleasant necessities is the best reason for preparation, thus the sooner to forget what we dislike. July 11 :ditr Pendleton, Or Kast oregouian. By courtesy of this paper I am per mitted to tell you Something of the proposed Herman Hall-Fmatllla road. The Port law of Ihe state affords ft means v.harehy any district border ing upon navigable waters may de velop i port and construct means or transportation from Interior points Of ihe dl.trict to connect with navigation ind thus extend wt.ter transportation to the Interior of the port district. WPh this in view the organization 'if the Part of Umatilla Is linden Should the nor! be form"! be the duty of Its commissioners .t that kind of road wnnti way being patented I will say that I have no patent rights or privileges for sale, but I do have such rights to give freely to the proposed district If it decides to use this kind of road. Fur thermore, the district may build the road under my specifications at the actual cost with ten per cent to the contractor. If it prefers to do so. rath er than accept the price of $15,000 per mile, which after ten months of Investigation and study of the ground, I have estimated as the cost Of ft double track road. The cost provides very light curves and grades, the lat ter r.ot exceeding in effect 1 per cent toward the river and 2 per cent from the river. I reCOgniM that there is prejudice against a iatented road, but when un derstood, as set forth above, this will certainly disappear. Many of the conveniences In every day use are pat ented and perhaps are, in consequence, better In quality and lower In price. Among them are electric bulb, the au tomobile, almist every kind of farm machinery. er, No one would tnniK of refusing to use these things because they are covered by patent. The prime object In placing the Pitman roadway in the patented class la to require Its proper construction and restrict Its use to the kind of ve hicles (soft tires and motor driven) for which it Is designed. Pnder such conditions I have no doubt of its lasting SO or 100 years or more. Any property owner of the proposed district who is in favor of utilizing water transportation will not, if In formed, oppose the organisation of the port and the building of the road As to the wheat growers and ttli owners of wheat lands, conservative , figures ill show that they will more , than pay for the Improvement from savings and that In fact the road will tot 11 year, the ntsndard remedy fur til ikin dlaeuea.
