John Davidson WE REAP AS WE HAVE SOWN Y the verdict of a Wiscon jQ sin jury Will Orpet has been acquitted of the murder of Marian Lambert. It may be presumed that under the law he was entitled to ac quittal. The state did not prove him guilty and could not do so. The one person who knew the real facts, aside from Orpet, was dead and in her grave. But the jury's verdict will not change the facts in the case nor relieve Orpet from punish ment. If not guilty of murder he at least was very largely re sponsible for a situation that caused a girl to prefer death to life under the conditions that would confront her. He him self is aware of the degree to which he is at fault and he will never escape from that con sciousness. He knows the truth and no jury's verdict can wipe that knowledge from his mind. AH is not fair in love and war. It is not honorable to OR the time being at least the natural home of the progressives is in the democratic partv. 1 hat nam : is new in power and enthusi ; astic to "make good" by giving people results. It has not been spoiled by long years of unin terrupted rule and heavy cam paign contributions from in terests that have axes to grind. The republican party has not yet been regenerated through tasting. It is still the party of special privilege and its plat-, torm this year bears the unmis-j takable earmarks of servitude to Wall street. The same old i guard is in control. The logical thing for the . country is to keep the present, administration in power fori another term. Give the demo- crats a full chance to showi what they can do. The repub licans had many years in power i and their management was disappointing. That party needs to summer fallow and get back closer to the Lincoln standard from which it has gone far astray. A republican defeat this year would be disappointing to I would-be officeholders and those hoping to profit through ' control. But it would be the best thing that could happen j to the republican party. It would do much to kill off the weeds of privilege and misrule j and put the party in shape for j use when such use once morei becomes desirable. That time will come eventually if notj soon because in time the dem-i ocratic party, like the repub-i lican party, will be perverted; through having continuous power, and will deserve de-i feat. At present the party i does not merit retirement. It is making good and common sense calls for giving it en couragement. The druggists and the doc tors together will do consider able to stamp out bootlegging if they continue their present attitude. Our vigorous fall weather is very welcome in July.
