U Stanton IN THE DOUBTFUL COLUMN CHE most striking evidence that Oregon is regarded! in the doubtful class with reference to the presidential! election is the fact republican! state leaders are striving to have their candidate make a trip to this state. Ordinarily this is a safe re-j publican state and it is doubt ful if a republican candidate ' ever before made a campaign trip to this section. The fact the state managers are implor- ing Justice Hughes to take time for some speeches in Oregon i shows very clearly they have fears as to the outcome. They j realize the strength of Presi dent Wilson in Oregon and it j alarms them. The situation is interesting) because if Oregon is really1 doubtful as the republican.- by. ORTLAND rs today show ing honor to the memory of Lieutenant Adair. Killed at Carrizal. and it is en tirely fitting that this should be done. However, no show of emotion at this time can bring this soldier back to life. He is dead and all the flowers in the world and all the music ami the speeches cannot change his fate one billioneth part of !i degree. For him the sun has st-t and the joys of life are gone forever. The time to save a man's life is before he is dead. In this connection it will be well lemembered that President Wilson has striven to solve the Mexican trouble without war tare. Instead of sending nu merous thousands, of soldiers, on both sides, to their graves and then settling the issue in conference the Wilson plan has been to confer on the subject prior to the slaughtering act and with a view to avoiding bloodshed. Considering the difficulties he has had to face he has ctone well. In many re spects the outlook for a peace ful solution of the trouble is brighter than for many months past. The most gratifying thing about the Adair memorial ser vice is that it is the only ser vice of the sort the state has been obliged to hold. SUPER-ODOROUS aaHlLE the east is battling Tfcf with infantile paralysis and health boards are urging precautions against flies and dirt it is timely to re mark that there are some con cations here that should not be tolerated. The Chinese garbage collec tor commonly to be seen in our business section has a trans portation "plant" that smells worse than a flock of dead lim burger cheese factories. He1 gathers swill from the backs of restaurants and carries the same in a dripping bucket to his wagon. It is a sight to make strangers wonder what sort of a town this Pendleton place might be. Sanitary galvanized cans for handling garbage can be pur chased very cheaply and there is no earthly use of allowing such methods as are followed by some of the collectors. If common decency cannot '.ork a reform in this line the Last Oregonian hopes the scare iibout infantile paralysis and the accompanying admonition t clean up will strike some parts of Pendleton. HE new attitude of the , business world toward centralization and con solidation in industry has per-i haps had no illustration as striking as the failure of the proposed motor car merger. Combination in automobile plants has already made con-; siderable progress. The Gen-! eral Motors Co. seven years ago ! ioined a number of the most' powerful and lucrative con-j cerns in the industry. A peri-; od of increased business tension found it with resources spread out, with an organization not yet made effective and with an insufficient ratio of cash( capital to its huge volume ofj securities. With prosperous subsidiaries, the holding com pany continued for five years in a practical state of insolven cy until the sensational rise of its stock values last year that classed it among the most spe culative "war babies." Several reasons are given for the abandonment of the plan of the past month to add to the ; General Motors subsidiaries further companies controlling highly popular cars. The real reason is that bankers and fi nanciers were unsympathetic and conservative business thought frowned on the plan. Its very failure is a reason for (increased confidence in con tinued stability. Probably the end of the war, looked for : within the next 18 months, will j not bring the changes alarmists 1 predict. Rut business prepar edness should be well advanc ed for withstanding snch i changes as it may bring.
