The E. M Chandler sawmill at Middleton was completely destroyed by fire re cently. The loss will total well up toward 112. UUD and it is not certain as to .whether any insurance was in lone, as .Mr. Chandler has left this matter each yeat to agents of the companies carrying the insurance. It Is not probable that Mr. Chand ler will rebuild his mill, as It is be lieved there is not sufficient timber adjacent to warrant the expenditure Besides the loss to the mill company, the fire will throw more than a score of men out Ot employment. While the market for swine is considered steady to strong, there was extreme weakness and dullness indicated by other lines of livestock at North Port land. Few hogs came forward to the North Portland yards over night, and the trend of the market Is favorable. Tops are still quoted at 18.25, or the same as on Monday. The local trade la very much am used at the report that local packers were willing to pay $8.25 for top grain fed steers if they were avail able. This Is classed along with the report that a Portland man wes wil ling to pay 5 for a single watermelon grown in Oregon during the month of January. The truth of the matter Is the cat tle market Is a mass of weakness. There Is no denying that fact. Ex treme top available for grass steers at this time Is 17 Vi, and it takes ex ceptional quality to bring above J7 0 7.25. There are no rain fed steers available at this time of the season, and killers know It quite well. Most of the trade Is quoting top lambs around 8.25. The market for ewes is especially weak, with an extreme wide range In prices due to the spread of quality. Sales were made recently as low as 2 l-4c. and as high as 6c. This Is a case aiiainst a local den- tlst for violating the dental law, and Is the seventh proesclton without a conviction. PORTLAND, Ore., June 28. With the government a heavy buyer of beans along the Pacific coast and with holding of good quality exhaust ed in the east, the price list here is now showing the highest figures known by the local trade. Sensational advances in the price of beans have been forced both here and in California as a result of the in creased business, both from the gov ernment and from the Atlantic sea board. The real price of small white beans to retailers here for the day were 10 l-4c a pound with large white at 9 3-4c. So far as the local trade re members no such high prices have ever before been quoted here. While not all wholesalers are asking as much as these quotations, still the prices named are the regular market basis and these selling for less are. simply slicing their profits with the retailers. The Pacific coast this season has its greatest acreage in beans.
