A bul letin on cotton production In the Bats ted States, just issued by Director Sam la Rogers, of the Bureau of the Cen sus, Department of Commerce, and I prepared under the supervision of Mr. William M. Steuart. chief statistician j in charge of ihe inquiry, shows the American cotton crop of lit 1 5 ll. 11,111 equivalent 300-pound bales to have been the smallest since 1909. j The tables contained in this publica tion wtU be reprinted in the annual cotton bulletin, to be published about October 1, which will also include more detailed figures as to produc tion, together with data In regard to consumption, imports, exports and stocks of cotton. The crop of 1915 fell below that of the preceding year by nearly 5,000. oon bales, or more than 30 per cent. The production in every state showed a decrease, the greatest proportion ally being in Oklahoma, where the crop of 1915 was only a trifle mora than half as large as that of 19H. The increase In the production of linters during recent years is note worthy. Starting at 114.541 bales in 1S99. the output of this product in creased to S80.780 bales in 1915. Tha 1915 linter product even exceeded that of the preceding year by nearly 24.000 bales, although the cotton crop o 1915 was very much smaller than that of 1914. This Increase In linter production is due to some extent to closer delintlng of the seed for the better separation of the meat from the hulls, but more especially to the high prices obtained for the fiber, which Is used extensively In the man ufacture of guncotton and smokeless Powder. Many mills now obtain con siderably more than 100 pounds of linters per ton of seed treated, where as In earlier years 50 pounds per ton was a high yield. Sea-Island cotton, of which 91,844 running bales were ginned in 1913, represented in that year less than 1 I pPr r of the total cotton produced. ail tnis cotton was grown in Oeorgta, Florida and South Carolina, the first named state producing 57.572 bales, or more than three-fifth of the total. Although cotton is grown in 18 statets, the combined product of four Texas. Georgia. South Carolina and Alabama represented nearly two thirds of the total crop of 1915. Texas alone produced 3,227.480 hales, or more than one-fourth of the total crop of 1915. The next great est production was that of Georgia, 1.908,673 bales, or more than one- sixth of the total. Other states pro ducing large cropswere South Caro lina with. 1.133,919 hales; 1.020.839 hales; Mississippi, 953,965 bales; Arkansas, 816.002 bales; North Carolina. 699.494 bales; and Oklaho ma. 639.6 26 bales. The leading cotton country In re flect to number of hales ginned from the growth of 1915 is Ellis county, Tex., which reported 1 17,337 bales. The only other county to report more than 100.000 hales was Roliver coun ty. Miss., in which the glnnlngs am ounted to 102,838 bales. LONDON, June 23 Although the London morning papers all deny re ports of the organization of a new International banking house with an Initial capital of over 10,000,000 pounds, aiming, under the supervi sion of the government, to assist Rrltish traders and manufacturers to secure a big share of the trade with the allied countries after the war, It appears that tentative plana for some such organization are Delng discussed in high financial quarters. It is felt that a great bank of this type, co-operating with similar Insti tutions In France, Italy and Russia, would enable British traders to par ticipate to the exclusion of the Ger mans In the enormous work of re storing and rebuilding the ravaged portions of Europe.
