They have no right, nor do they as sert anv, to ask that farmers be restricted by license from sell ing their produce from house to house. There is a distinction be tween the professional peddler and the producer who peddles what he raises, and this dis tinction should be sharply drawn in any ordinance which the city passes for the regula tion of peddling. The professional peddler pays no taxes, pays no rent and is not called upon to contrib ute to public enterprises such as are the merchants every week of the year. More often than not the professional ped dler sells inferior stuff or short weight stuff at prices much lower than the merchant asks for better grade stuff. He is more or less of a migratory citi zen, for generally his practices will not permit of him remain ing long where he becomes known. On the other hand the small farmer and gardener many times finds it necessary to sell lrom house to house if he is to realize any returns from his i crop. To require a license from j him would be to do him an in-j justice for he is a producing j citizen who should be encour-! aged. The merchants in petitioning; the council made it plain that they are not objecting to thisj latter class of peddling. I he difficulty lies in drawing a dis tinction that will permit of the enforcement of the purpose of the ordinance. There should be some way of reaching the one class without infringing upon the rights of the othei and there are doubtless wise enough heads in the city to find the way. ABORIGINAL ART aT a time when the obstacles to importation of German dyes for textile goods is causing annoyance and loss to our manufacturers it is inter esting to learn that the native industry of the Clayquot tribe of Indians in British Columbia is flourishing apace. These people produce their bright colored fabrics with jet black dye from the mud of the swamps, red and pink from al der bark, brown from hemlock, yellow from the root of the grape ; and so other tints from natural resources, just as their forefathers for generations back. Something may be learned from these examples of abori ginal art; they have practised it for ages with entire success and the approval of native critics.
