Is Lost lUvcr Pound? ORLKANS. Ind., May 19. Drillers engaged In sinking wells for the new water works system struck a powerful stream of water at a depth of 30 feet, it is believed the men drilled into a branch of the historic Lost River or an underground cavern. The roar of the water can be plainly heard for Some distance, and despite the fact It Us only 100 feet from another well Wblch is 113 feet deep and through solid rock for more than 90 feet, the water appears to be of the same qual ity and flavor as in the deep well. The phenomena Is creating much ex SALEM, Ore., May 1. Fire at the Oregon penitentiary yesterday de stroyed four large orlck buildings in u group of six, menaced the main prison structure and caused a loss es timated at $26,000. There was no In surance. The origin of the fire Is not known. The fire wits discovered at 4:46 P m. by convlcu, when flames were seen issuing from the rear part of the building used for drying flax and ad joining the boiler room. Fanned by a high wind from the northwest, the fire spread rapidly and in less than 10 minutes It had bten communicated to tour buildings. The flax drying plant contained about 20 tons of retted flax, valued at 25 a ton. The prrson steam plant anil the shoe shop were gutted by fire, the roof was burned off of the machinery shop and the machinery badly damaged by water. Heroic work of the prisoners, assist ed by the Salem fire department and , ftcore or asvlum ontiAntH unrioiihtAri- ly prevented the destruction of the 0 entire flax plant Water to fight the fc flames was obtained from the prison and from the auxiliary plant of the state hospital. Many of the convrcts endangered their lives by plunging into the burn ing buildings to aid in fighting the flumes and several sustained painful cubs and bruises from falling timbers and broken glass. With the discovery of the fire, tho night force of guards Just cbming on duty were rushed to the east wall, doubling the number on guard, but no attempt to escape was made. After the fire bad been extinguished it was discovered that a number of knives were mistiing from the prison shoe shop, but upon Investigation no convict was found to have them in his possession. That tho fire was caused from a smut explosion in the flax drying room is the theory of Superintendent Minto, who said that this was a dan ger which It had been necessary to guard against throughout the handling of the crop. A lew months ago some oil soaked rags were round by prison employes hidden in a pile of flax straw and at the time it was suggested that some prisoner had attempted by this means to destroy the flax crop. : ; : ALTA THEATRE Oliver Mora Ms CONSTANCE COLLIER The Versatile English Actress and Beauty in III I 5 IUIF TIT in "ii m rn 5 Tkn rOnl a a CURIO U raiiM way A drama of the newer, bigger, better type, telling a story of a wealthy financier brought face to face with sudden i uin.
