No cr!es from the little one reached the house and it was not until a half hour later that his mother missed him Mr, Jackson returned home from his milk route a few minutes after and immediately set out in search of the baby His first fear was that the child had fallen into the cesspool, and on going to the spot, he saw almost at once an edge of the child's garment protruding from the mire. A physi cian was summoned Immediately, but every" effort at resuscitation proved in vain. miiiiimimiiimiiiiiimiiiiiiitiiitiiiiim I ANSCO I Cameras Socialists Would End War. S LOXDOJf. April 25. The reason why so many people whe suffer from Catarrh never seem able to get cured is that they are contin ually seeking the momentary relief of sprays, douching, greasy creams, oint ments, etc. Such things do open up the swollen nostrils and clear the head temporarily, besides stopping for a while the disggusting blowing, hawk ing, spitting and choking, but they never cure. To drive out Catarrh for good you have got to get down to its real cause. Catarrh is a germ disease The air is always full or catarrh germs thrown off by one person and absorb e by another and wnen the system dees fail to throw off such germs they find permanent lodgment in the nose, throat and head and multiply rapid ly. The germs of catarrh can be best destroyed by inhaling the pure medi cated air f Hyomel (pronounced Hiph-o-me). This splendid and pow erful combination of oil of Eucalyp tus with other healing agents had a Wi aderful germicidal action. You breathe its air into yrur nose, throat and lungs by means of a small hard rubber inhaler which Tallman Co. and other leading druggists here in Pendleton and vicinity supply with ev ery treatment. This medicated air is certain death to the germs of Catarrh and drives them completely out of your system and when the germs are destroyed the catarrh with all its dis agreeable symptoms will stop. Even two or three minutes use will give re freshing relief, while, lr you will use it two or three times a day for a few weeks it will completely Danish catarrh and ev.-ry symptom of catarrh. As Hyomel is pleasant to breathe and Is always, sold by druggists everywhere with a positive guarantee of success ful results or monv back, surely no Catarrhal sufferer should go long be fore trying this simple home remedv A great deal of film comedy Ml horse-play, but David W. Griffith in; "The Birth of a Nation," which opens j three days' engagement at the Oregon I on Thursday, April 2", proves that j quiet refined comedy is a big laugh maker and pleases better than the oldj style crude methods. One of the best laughs in the Birth , of a Nation" is the lovesick sentry in I the hospital scene gazing at Elsie i Stoneman This particular bit Is of i the "sure fire" order, for never does I an audience miss the rapt devotion of I the sentinel and the hauty expression of the young lady rebuking him with a million-miles-away look. Paul Le Wane Is the name of the young actor who has made the unex pected hit in the part. He is a New Orleans Creole by birth and played comedy roles with Mme. Bernhardt before going out to Los Angeles where Mr. Griffith discovered him. Thi costuming of the young soldier Is won derfully accurate to the period 1864. Some of the recent Civil War portraits in the magazines and news papers are almost aouhlets of this sentry figure, showing what care Grif fith has used in reproducing the Civil War type Miss Lillian Gish wears her cos tumes of civil war and reconstruction times that are heirlooms in her fam ily. Through Griffith's skill all the actors in the production are made to appear as If to the manner born and not awkwardly moving about In habili ments to which they are unaccustom-ed. THREE MEN ESCAPE FROM THE LA GRANDE JAIL SUNDAY MORNING LA GRANDK, Ore., April 25. With a display of boldness almost unprecedented in Jail history in this county, three men bored their was out -of the brick walls of the count; Jail Sunday morning and are still at liberty. The three to cut their way to freedom are Hurrll Tiffany, of this city, serving a jail term for stealing a' bicycle and with but 19 days left, and two men captured by a train crew at I'nlon Junction some tlfne ago after they had broken Into som Ureek and JapuneHe bunk houses and pocketed valuables. Their mimes are Charles Broomslckle and Oeorge Stuffier, two strangers. It Is the practice of authorities to allow prisoners Into the corridors of the Jail at portions of the day and to lock them up at night In individual cells. In order to negotiate their es. cape as they did. the men had to titll iie the brief period of time they wer left In the locked-up corridors, alone. With an iron knife they dislodged a brick In the wall, and the time needed to remove mortar und brick In suf ficient number to give easy nectm to freedobi was of course short fter the first brick was loosened.
