Fol lowing la a summary' of the crop con ditions In Oregon for the week end ing April 18, 1916, as reported to the local office of the weather bureau by special correspondents throughout the state: While the weather during the week was cool and showry and there was less sunshine than usual, the crops are all in a healthy condition and making satisfactory progress Fall wheat, al falfa and pastures have done especially wi ll, und while apring sown crops have made little progress, they have done as well as could be expected un der the existing conditions. The soli Is in splendid condition for plowipg. Most of the spring crops have been sown, und the farmers are now push ing their summer fallowing work In the fall grain sections of the state. Kven In the dry farming counties the reports received state there is a plen tiful supply of moisture in the soli, and the only thing needed Is warmer weather to start satisfactory growth. The ranges have improved greatly during the week, and stock Is rapidly taking on flesh. Fruit bloom Is unusually heavy and where early the fruit has set well. Hood River apples are now In "the pink," and soon will be In bloom No serious frost damage occurred dur ing the week. Aprl 20 The most severe break In several weeks was recorded In the stock market at the opening yesterday. The serious as pect of the German situation, aug meenteil. by President Wilson's ulti matum, operated for lower levels In nearly all the standard issues. As a class the specialties held best agninst I he pressure, and in one or two In stances fractional gams were scored, while the balance of the list was breaking. The rails were from 1-2 to 1 point under at the opening. Aside from Reading, little improvement was not ed during the course of trading. Read ing opened fractionally under, and while it failed to recover In the first hour, its trend was healthy, consid ering the heavy selling pressure. The steel Issues were nard hit. Cru cible started out 3-6 below Tuesday's close; Lackawanna lost 3 points al most immediately following the open ing, and 1'nited States steel opened at 82, 1 point off, and suffered still fur ther losses. Butte & superior was strongeest and most active of the copper issues, op ening at 90 1-4, and going above 91 at first. Zinc was a sharp loss.
