O Lord, till perfect day shall shine. Through peace to light. Adelaide A. Proctor. SENATOR LANE AND LAND GRANT THE SENATOR LANE'S letter SB and his statement before the house public lands committee is not altogether en couraging from the standpoint of those working to secure 40 per cent of the land grant mon ey for the school fund. The senator seems to give first thought to the idea of turning the land over to set tlers in 160 acre tracts. Yet the modem settler on such lands as this is no settler at all. He is a speculator or a dummy entryman for some party or parties desiring to secure good timber at a cheap price. If all or a large part of the grant land should be thrown open to entry the land would be quickly taken, but the state . would get nothing. An entry man on timber land would be unable to use his timber him self. He would have to sell his timber for a song and the real beneficiary of the plan would be not the settler or the state but the gentleman finally getting the timber. How much better for the government to sell the timber outrisrht at commercial prices and apply 40 per cent of the proceeds to our school fund and 40 per cent for roads in the land grant counties. The East Oregonian may not thoroughly understand Senator Lane's position and credits him with all sincerity in his atti tude, but he appears too much impressed with the "poor set tler" argument. He should beware of gentlemen who talk tearfully about the horny handed settler in this day and MANY a motor ist is demand ing a government gasoline tank when he should be looking under the hood of his car PENDLETON AUTO CO 4m ABtoagoMlcs. Parts, Arreawofleit age for he is likely to have something up his sleeve. The real settler of the olden days is just about extinct and in dis posing of property worth many millions of dollars congress should base its notions on facts not upon fiction. If there are genuine settlers located on any of this land in good faith they are entitled to protection. But outside of them the state's interest will best be served through the sale of the land at market prices, the proceeds being used for upbuilding the school fund and for other purposes of a public nature. FROM THE PEOPLE KEITHS WERE PIONEERS. Pilot Rock, Ore., April li. Editor East Oregonian: I see in your paper where the nan ? of Pilot Rock Junction is changed to Keith. I think that is a very appro priate name. I am surprised that the Cast Oregonian saya that the name 01 Reith is unknown. The Relth boy. were some of the oldest of the old pi oneers. They owned land at the mouth of Birch creek from In the sixties up to the eighties. They ran sheep extentively ail over the h:llx around where Pilot Rock Junction la now and the three boys, as they were always called, Jake, Eugene and Lou ts, owned several hundred acres of deeded land from the Junction down the river and also up Birch creek over as far as Coombs Canyon. At one time they were large property owners In Pendleton and Tacoma. Two of them are still living near Sprague, Wash., Eugene and Louii Keith The other is dead. Tours very truly, JOHN BRADBURN.
