Decrease in Wheat Report Proves a Big Factor in the Trading for Week PORTLAND. Ore., April 10. Per haps the government report showing a condition of the American winter wheat crop at 78. t per cent or In I other w ords calling for a crop of 496.. 000,000 bushels compared with 656 -866.000 bushels for the same crop In 1916, had much to do with the im proved demand for wheat during the week. From this time forward the condi tion of the American wheat crop as well aa the growth In other parts ot the world, will have much to do with values on old crop offerings. Last reports received Indicate that not only does the American wheat crop ahow a great decreased acre age and loaa In the condition aa com pared with a year ago. but practically every leading world's center is show ing a similar condition. The condition In Australia Is es pecially bad so far as the new crop acreage Is concerned. Surplus Not So Heavy. While there ha been a great ur- plus of wheat grown In the world thla season, the consumption has been much greater than normal. Owing lo war conditions abroad the wastage has been greater than normal. The wheat tiade will undoubtedly go into the next crop with the greatest surplus ot wheat In its history but this 1b not as alarming a eondlt'on as seems at firs! Klance. In the first place the great decrease in the winter 'wheat planting end the probable decrease In the s ring area, will mean that the entlr world la not likely to produce even an average crop during 1916. Due to the fact that the three states have not only had a bumper production, but with aimilar quality while the rest of the world has produced poor quality: there has been a noticeable stiffening of values here In comparison with what wheat has been quoted in other centers. Fanners Able to Hold. During the week the price of wheat has been rather erratic here with the trading limited. Country holders have not been disposed to accept current figures and while there has been n.uch more Inclination among eastern interests to take hold at present val ues, the movements has been curtaif ed considerably by the inability of buyers to induce growers to part with their supplies. Most of the wheat now held on the farms is In strong hands. Growers are in such financial position where they really are not compelled to let go of their supplies unless they v.i;nt to. They are asking $1 a bushel generally for these supplies and have generally signified their intention of holding them over into the coming crop year unless they secure the price before that. There has been a noticeable show. Ir.g of real strength in the coarse grain markets after an initial spell of weakness. Higher prices are again offered but there is little selling in the country. April 10 Wheat farmers In the Walla Walla valley have been putting forth their best efforts during the past week of spring weather. Much of the delayed work has been completed. It Is es timated that another week of favor able conditions will find the farmers wholly prepared for the growing sea son, even though the weather early in the spring was auch that farm work was an Impossibility. Enlarged crews have been employed on practically all of the farms, while on the smaller Places the regular crews have worked overtime to finish plowing and seed ing operations. The warm weather of the week has given fall-sown wheat an excellent start Fields have turned a deep green and In all parts of the vani llic plants have come forward rapid ly. With the ground well saturated with moisture. In fact, to a depth not known for years, the prospect for the coming wheat crop could not be bet ter and farmers are now looking for ward to their next great fear, that of hot winds when the wheat is in the critical stage. Reports from various parts of the county Indicate that the weed pests this season will not be had . even though there waa much cold, wet weather early In the spring. De lays are being encountered in getting domestic supplies from the weet as well as foreign wool transshipped at Vancouver. New Mexico wool shipped January 1 is just being received and some rail roads have declared an entire embar go on shipments east Business was quiet during the week with about 4 "00.000 pounds being sold and prices holding up.
