Marren, known as "Whltey" Marren, was Friday afternoon In dicted by the grand Jury on a charge of second degree murder In connec lion with the death of Wendell Phil lips of Spokane who was fatally shot 'luring a scuffle In a local rooming house during the early morning of January 30. Phillips was shot through the leg and lost so much blood that lie died two Jays later In his dyln statement he declared that Warren I otnted a gun at him and, that during the scuffle which ensued, the gun was discharged. PILOT ROCK MAN LEASES LEHMAN SPRINGS RESORT Joe Hover, well known pioneer ho tel man of Pilot Rock, has leased the 1-ehman Springs resort for the coming season and expects to take possession Just as soon as the roads become pas sable to the Place, probably June 1, Mr. Rover announces that the hotel and furnishings will be given a thor ough overhauling and renovation. Improvements will be made where ne cessary. Mr. Royer has engaged the well known violinist. Mr. Johnson, who has been at the Springs on previ ous occasions, to again furnish the music for the dances and other en tertainments which will be an Import ant feature of the season. Different sections of the law are rather conflicting regarding the sea son in which salmon may be taken with spear or foul hook In this coun ty and the state game warden has told the local authorities to use their Judgment in the matter. Since the law doe not state definitely regard ing the season In which salmon may be taken with spear or foul hook in this county the matter of taking sal mon by that means will be allowed as soon as the salmon appear in this county (and not Before then.) Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thompson re turned home yesterday from a few days' visit near Weston. W W. Hoch Is up from Pendleto for a few days looking after business. John Hager has been confined to his home the past few days with a severe case of grippe. Mr. and Mrs. Polfay Thompson are spending a week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Seth W'yatt near Weston. George Kidder who has been visit ing here with bis son. Ed Kidder, re turned Monday to his home In Se attle Mr. and Mrs. .lohn Thompson and Miss Bvstyn Meager were Saturday visitors In Pendleton. Quite a number of fishermen were on the river Sunday" but no very large catches were made.
