The fire loss in Pendleton for March amounted only to ISO, accord ing to the monthly report of Fire Chief Rlngold. There were two small fires and no false alarms. Forty gallons of chemicals were used and two quarts of Pyrene, and 200 feet of hose was laid. Don Rader With Vernon. Don Rader, former Pendleton boy, looks like a fixture In the utility berth for the Vernon club of the Pa cific Coast League this season, lea der was going strong at the close of last season but the advent of many Federal league stars lost him a place In the regular line-up. Telephone 528 Indians Have New Pastor. The Indian congregation of Tutuil la has a new pastor In the person of Rev. William Wheeler of Ashohka. Idaho, who some years ago acted as pastor of the Tutuilla church. He Is a Nes Perce Indian and has been an ordained minister for a number of years. Rev. Wheeler arrived yester day in response to the call made to hla. Dickenson for Treasurer. Oliver Dickenson, prominent far mer of the Athena vicinity, today filed as a candidate for the democratic nomination for county treasurer and, If nominated, will probably contest for the office with Treasurer G. W. Bradley, who seeks to succeed him self. Mr. Dickenson is an old time resident and has a host of friends to assist him in his campaign. Him Half or Taxes In. The time for the payment of the first half of the 1916 taxes expired yesterday evening and there was i rush during the last few days at the sheriffs office. Ths actual amount of taxes collected has not yet been I summed up but Deputy Sheriff Funkj states that collection has been as Rood as in the average year. Students Serve Luncheon. The second year student of the domestic science class of the high school are now serving their 20 cent luncheon. Misses Edith Kichardson, Gladys Simpson and Juanlta Frledley will serve the first one Friday noon to five guests. The g!ril mads out the menu, figured out the cost ac count and planned the order of work. The meals must be prepared und served in a limited time with cleanli ness, speed, order and quietness. The girls are graded on the amount of time required for preparation, num ber of utensils used and the cooking and serving. Marriage License Issued. A marriage license was issued yes terday afternoon to Cnarles E. Work man and Nora Shuck of this city and they were married at the bride's home by Rev. C. A Hodshlre of the Methodist church. Allen of the government ex periment station at Hermiston an nounced wh'le here today that he has a quantity of grain sorghum seed on hand which will be distributed free to applicants provided they will try the seed out and make a reDort ta him In the fall of the success made. This variety, Mr. Allen says. Is prac tically drought proof and he is par ticularly anxious to get the seed dis tributed among some of the dry sec t'ons In this end of the countv. Remonstrance to Road Change A remonstrance to the proposal for a road change north of Helix, so that the road will run through the raneh of Harlow Richmond and elim inate, two bad hills, was filed with the county court today. There were sev enteen signatures to the remon strance. The remonstrance Is made on the alleged ground's that there 11 Jnrj in Indian Case Is (hit. A verdict of guilty was returned at 3 o'clock. The Jury in the case of the govern ment vs. Joe Craig and Rena John son, charged with adult ry. went out at noon today and began considering the evidence after lunch. The prose cution closed early yesterday after, noon and the defense struck a snag early In Its case In a ruling of Judge Bean. The defense was attempting to show that Rena Johnson had had sev eral husbands after Milton George to whom she was married under ths white man's law In 1903. However, Judge Bean ruled that she could not be divorced from Milton George save In the white man's courts. The de fense was seeking to show that she had been divorced after the Indian custom. The defense tried to show later that the case had been brought at the Instance of several Indians who have personal grievances against Craig. soda Fountain for sale. Mr. Estoup has been failing for about a year, and owing to hi advanced age, no hope has bean en tertained for his recovery for several months. Interment was In Ford oem-etery.
