WHERE DOESSENATOR
LANE STAND?
rf WING to the fact the po
sition of Senator Lane
with reference to the
land grant bill has not been
made clear the East Oregonian
Monday evening sent the sena
tor the following wire :
Our people very anxi
ous to secure 40 per cent
grant land money for
school funds. Some news
papers report you as luke
warm in matter. Will
you please wire statement
your position.
EAST OREGONIAN.
Last week an inquiry of a
similar nature was made of
Congressman Sinnott when a
report from Washington cast
doubt upon his attitude. Mr.
8innott promptly replied with
a statement making it clear he
has been working vigorously
for the school fund and in
tends doing so until the sub
ject is disposed of.
To the message sent Senator
Lane no reply has been receiv
ed though an immediate ans
wer was requested. What his
silence means this paper does
not know but it does not seem
j encouraging. The facts are
j given so as to show the situa
tion as we find it The legis
lation at issue involves some
thing like $18,000,000 for the
irreducible school fund of Ore
gon. If we have senators or(
representatives uncertain as to
where they stand or unwilling
to make their positions known
it is certainly time to find it
out
THE HONESTY HABIT
3UONESTY is habit produc-'
ed by the life ideal of
the individual and influ
enced greatly by heredity.!
There are varying standards I
of honesty and most people are
true to their own notions on the ,
subject. However, some pec-'
pie have loose ideas regarding
the matter and consider it
right to get away with any
thing they can for themselves
even though they disregard the
rights of others.
Not so with Louis A. Berner,
a poor workman in St Louis.'
He is a man with a wife and !
five children. Out of work!
and walking the streets in
search of a job he found a dia
mond earring worth $350. To'
most men in his circumstances
the temptation would have!
been strong to sell the gem and
pocket the coin for his own
use. Berner restored the ear-'
ring to its owner and said he 1
had felt no temptation to keep
it. His conception of honesty i
required him to seek the right-:
ful owner and he was true to
his own convictions. He mani-1
fested a habit tendency that
could well be imitated by
many people who do not have !
five children and do not have
to walk the streets in search!
of work.
