Team Getting Shape.
The local baseball team will be
managed by John Dickson for the
coming season and Mr. Dickson is
now casting around for material. The
Pendleton players will be known as
the "Bucks." A call has been made
to all who have a desire to try for
the team to report to Mr. Dickson
Every position Is open as yet. A good
catcher is particularly wanted. The
local team means to go out hard for
the pennant in the Blue Mountain
league.
Londos Defies Ajax.
Jim Londos, wrestler, has come
out with a defi to Tony Ajax, another
wrestler. Jim says In a letter to the
East Oregonian, that he hears Ajax
is considered a good wrestler by Pen
dleton fans. Jim says he Is ready to
show up Tony by throwing him just
as many times as he wants to be
thrown in an hour. L K. Harlan,
who has been handling bouts for both
men says Londos Is heavier than Ajax
but that both are world beaters in
their weights.

Candidates Are Slow.
Local young ladies have been slow
to come forward In announcing them
selves as candidates for Rose Queen
at the Portland festival and their
friends likewise have been slow In
making any proposals of eligible
young women. There are still a few
days left. If one wishes to express a
preference all he has to do Is sign
the person's name on one of the cou
pons appearing In the papers and send
it to the Commercial club or drop It In
the ballot boxes In any of the stores.

date for the honor In the race, no time
should be lost In selecting one. Tick

Roosevelt's Secretary Arrested.
NEW YORK, March 29. As a re
sult of a saloon fight John W. Mc
Grath. secretary to Roosevelt, was
sentenced to Blackwell's Island for
30 days.
Gun Club Organized.
The Pendleton Rifle club has been
permanently organized with the fol
lowing officers: President, Dr. In
gram; vice president. James Bowler;
secretary, Roy Ayre; treasurer, Max
Hopper; executive officer, Lee Drake
A petition is now being circulated
making application for membership
in the National Rifle association. Tha I
petition must go through the adju
tant general for Oregon and thence .

Fire on Smith Ranch.
Fire damage to the extent of $1000
with a net loss of $500 was caused
when the house on the Dr. C. J.
Smith ranch near Echo was destroy
ed Sunday. It Is thought the fire
was caused by a spark from the stove.
The place is farmed by Cliff Jordan
and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wells were oc
cupying the house. Mrs. Wells her
self removed most of the furniture
from the burning dwelling but owing
to a wire fence adjoining the place
she was unable to get the furniture
far enough away from the house to
save it, the furniture being caught,
and mostly burned.
British Steamer Sinks.
LONDON, March 29 The British
steel steamer Empress of Midland was
sunk, presumably submarined. All
hands were saved It was announced.

Writing from St. Johns, Ore, Drott
Larson suggests to Secretary C. H.
Marsh of the Round-up that a world's
championship horseshoe tournament
be staged in Pendleton at the next
Round-up. He points out that the
"pristine game of horseshoes" was the
favorite with miner, cowboy and
plainsman In the early days and still
has many devotees. He thinks a big
tournament here would be the means
of attracting many people, declaring
he stands ready to enter the list. The
Round-up board will consider the pro.

of the O.-W. R. A N. Co. has made
complaint to the school authorities
regarding the use of the company's
tracks by children going to school.
Especial attention is called to walk
ing on the tracks by children attend
ing the Hawthorne school. It Is said
some children make a habit of fol
lowing along the track, thus endan
gering themselves, when It Is need
