His talk dealt with practical business-methods of today and ho emphasised the need of honesty and trustworthiness In busmess dealings Indians Defeat Whites. The storm which broke about t j o'clock, continued for 2 minutes and was accompanied by terrific electrical displays. Stage Gulch is about IS miles long. The great wave reached the mouth, about four miles east of here, about 6 o'clock. Almost the entire popula tion of Stanfleld was out to watch the spectacle. At the mouth of the gulch the water was carried orf by irriga tion ditches and emptied into tho Umatilla river. The storm cut off all wire connec tions between this city and Stage gulch ranches and the extent of the dam age has not been learned, PORTLANt), (ire., March 20. Two lives lost and thousands of dollars property damage, was the toll of an electric storm which swept portions of Dragon and Washington yesterday. A four foot wall of muddy water swept away Thomus Shumwell, a farmer. His body was found lodged in a clomp of boshes. William Marks, a farmer of Kast Portland, was killed when a tree crashed through his house. The funeral of George Mansfield, who died here Friday night, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Brown chapel with Rev. H, H. Huhbell of the Christian church in charge. Interment will be made in 'Mney cemetery. Deceased, who was well known over the county, was 47 years old when he succumbed to pa ralysis. He was a native of eastern Oregon, having been born at Lexing. ten, Morrow county, March 4. 1869. He came to Pendleton in 1901 from Colfax, VVn.. where he had been in business and had been a continuous resident of this city since. A part of the time he was in business for him self but during the last few years had been employed by Peters & Morrison. He had a large circle of friends who are grieved at his death. He is sur vived by four children, .Sam. Bert. Ar thur and Mrs. Lizzie Webb, all of this city. His wife died a little over three years ago. S. S. S. the Proper Safeguard.
