EIGHT PAGES DAILY EAST OREGONIAN, PENDLETON, OREGON, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24. 1916. AGE THRFK "Wfi In Building A Highway you would build for efficient service now and for gen erations to come. The "Road to Wellville" is built that way. And the password to that road is "right living," in which food and drink play such a big part. More and more people are waking up to the need of banishing from the dietary heavy, indigestible foods, and food deficient in the vitalizing mineral salts. Food scientists now hold that the lack of these elements is one of the chief causes of a long Hat of ills, including anemia, constipation, nervous prostration, kidney trouble, and so on. Long ago a food now famous was devised to make up for this lack, and it does it admirably. That food is Grape-Nuts Made of whole wheat and barley, it contains all the nutrition of the grain, including those vital elements phosphate of potash, etc. which are indispensable for perfect balance of body, brain and nerves, and for warding off disease. This food comes ready to eat, is economical, and delicious. Digests quickly generally in about one hour and is full of health-making goodness. A ration of Grape-Nuts along with other food has started thousands on the "Road to Wellville." "There's & Reason" Stories From the War Zone BY WILBUR S FORREST. (United Press Staff Correspondent.) T. worms live In the Intestines of their hosts and produce thousands of eggs. These eggs pass out of the body of the animal that harbors the Worm and develop Into little round embryos with six hooks. To continue their de velopment these must be eaten by some other animal, usually of an en tirely different kind. When so eat en the little six hooked embryo bores its way Into the organs and tissues of Its new host, and develops into a cryst or bladder on the inside of which, turned Inside out, there grows one or mi.ny tapeworm 'heads.' These blad der worms may grow to very large size, but no further development takes places until they are eaten by the kind of animal from which the eggs or iginally came. "The common 'bladder worms' found In the connective tissue of rab bits, especially just under the skin and between the muscles, are th-; larvae of a species of tapeworm known as Taenia serialis. and will develop further only If eaten by a dog or co.' ote. or possibly by some other car nivorous animals such as wolves and foxes. In the intestine of such animals the bladder' is digested off, the 'head' turns right side out. fastens Itself to the wall of the intestine by hooks and suckers, and begins to form a se ries of segments thus developing in to the ordinary type of tapeworm. If the 'bladders' of the rabbit were eat en by man. however, the 'heads' as well as the bladders would be digest ed and there would be no 111 effects. Rabbits are again inflicted by acci dentally eating the eggs voided with the excrement of dogs or coyotes. "The species known as Taenia eehinococcus. supposed to have been found in jack rabbits in Portland, is : another species which will develop and become mature only in dogs, coyotes, j and wolves, but the bladder worm stage develops in a great variety of . ' animals, such as sheep, cattle, goats i rabbits, guinea pigs. hogs, some birds I and in man. It is rare in rabbits and j ' when found in them is almost always! in the liver or lungs; in this larval I condition It is absolutely harmless to! man only if swallowed as eggs do j these tapeworms develop in the hu- I man body.
