Not tariff, but protection against OM rugs is what the sheepmen need for building up their indtttf ,ind making it profitable, according to Charles Coopey of Portland, who this afternoon delivered an address to the Oregon Woolgrowers' association on the pure fabric bill and honest brand ing of fabrics. The speaker, who has been engag ed In the fight for laws compelling manufacturers using shoddies to la bel their products so that the con sumer will not lie deceived for many years, declared that such a law would do more than anything else to In crease the production and prices of wool. The truthful branding of woolen fabrics would within a short time double the wool production ..f according ; Oregon and make land, now lying oi any laoor-; ltll. produce millions of dollars. All of the sheep should be cut into classes and sheared separately. There are, at the present time, in nearly every band of sheep, at least four classes, consisting of coarse wools, fine wools, long wools and short Wool, which are easily separated by putting the sheep in a long chute and carefully examining the wool of each sheep and marking them accordingly. so they may be cut in their respec- t tlve classes. Two or three Wallowa county growers did this last season and were complimented by the buy ers upon the general improved ap pearance of their wool. All black sheep should also be sheared to themselves and great care exercised that none nf the black wool is mixed with the white. The most conveni ent way to avoid this, however, is to make mutton of all the black sheep lr the band and sII them. "The cutting of the wool close to the skin by the shearer at one stroke Is another Important thing that should be done. Hut a great mam shearers cut the top of the wool off. and by a back stroke cut the remain der, thereby making two short pieces of the wool. This is a thing that may be hard to correct, but by insist ence and persen iranee may be over come. The wool should then be carefully tied in the proper manner, which add greatly to its general ap. pearance.
