100 independent grocers and small
dialers from all parts of the city met

tailers of Portland.
They appointed a committee of
four, these to select a fifth member,
to take charge of the fight and de
termine the best method to pursue.
The four members appointed by the
meeting were Dan Kellaher and Ben
A. Bellamy, two of the grocers who
were arrested for having their place!
of business open last Sunday; L. R.
Merrick, secretary of the Oregon Re
tail Merchants' association, and C. E,
Monroe, grocer. These four selected
S S. Rich, cigar dealer, as the fifth
member.
By acclamation Dan Kellaher was
elected chairman of the meeting. He
said today it was the decision to con
tinue to keep their places of business
open on Sunday until the issue had
been settled. For keeping his store
open last Sunday, Kellaher has been
fined $25 by the district court and is
to appeal to the circuit court.
Many small grocers spoke at the
meeting, expressing their opinion ot
the law and the effect Its enforcement
would have on their business. Prob
ably the most impressive talk was
made by R. M. Leahy, a blind man,
who supports himself and mother
with his little confectionery store at
733 Union avenue north. He said his
business would be ruined if he should
be forced to close his ship Sundays.
He said he had always been oppos
ed to having blind men begging on
the street. He said he had made a
livng until a year ago by singing In
a theatre, and now he had all he pos.
sessed invested in his little business
and the business he did on Sunday
was necessary for him to keep his
head above the financial waters.
Blind Man Make- Appeal.
He appealed to all of his hearers to
support Kellaher in his fight he Is
making against "the octopus." It was
evident that by the "octopus" Leahy
referred to the Portland Retail Gro
cers' association.
