Porter Charlton, an American, was
found guilty here of murdering his
wife, formerly Mary Scott Castle of
San Francisco. He was immedi
ately sentenced to six years and five
months' imprisonment. As Charlton
has already served six years and four
months he has only one more month
to serve.
Charlton was accused of beating
his wife, formerly Mary Scott Castle,
! to death and throwing her body in
side of a trunk into Lake Como. The
charge against him was that of "un
premediated murder." the maximum
penalty for which rs 25 years.
Charlton had served but five years
and four months imprisonment, but a
ear was shaved off his term at the
(eginning of the war by Royal decree
The royal decree affected all prison-;
ers. After the verdict of guilty was;
returned, the prosecutor asked that'
Charlton be sentenced to seven years j
.and six months imprisonment, but the
idge refused to. comply'

Swedish steamer Sank.
LONDON, Oct. 26. A dispatch to
Reuters Telegram Company from
Wlaby. Sweden, says that the Swedish
steamer Rumina, of 1485 tons has
struck a mine off the East Oranton
light coast.
