The coun tilmen share with the mayor the responsibility for law en torcenient. This will be of in-1 creased importance next year because with the prohibition law in force there will be a bootlegging carnival here if. care is not taken. There will be rare opportunities for graft Uvause there are men who will be willing to pay in one way or another for police pro tection. The need is for a set of city officials in whose good faith and honesty people may have full confidence. A GREAT TRIUMPH FOR SCIENCE Ii Oh, Lis, Are DEMAND CLEAN, RELIABLE MEN 3N the various wards of the city an effort is being made to get capable and law respecting men to run for the vacancies on the council. It is a move that should be carried on with earnestness and thoroughness in even ward. The new city administra tion will have difficult prob lems to handle. Thev w ill be able to talk over a reg ular 'phone line and have the message transmitted automati cally by wireless telephone to other points not connected by wire. This is not a dream from Utopia. It is a regular an nouncement from authentic sources carried in the days news. It is said the serious problems are all solved and that such service may be es tablished as soon as the neces sary equipment is provided. This will mean wonderful! things. It should bring all the I world close together in one big j family. It will reduce cable j costs and wire charges on land.! It will mean much to individu-l als and to commercial houses. I It will be a blessing to thej newspaper business because it will mean the extension of the news gathering service and lower costs on news from over the seas. The newspaper read ing public will be the gainer by this innovation. The wireless telephone is a remarkable triumph of mod em science. There is inspira tion in the fact that this pro press comes to light in a peace ful nation at an hour when the rest of the world thinks of nothing but how to kill and de stroy. . A SPLENDID SHOWING fJMl the close of the registra JfJ, tion office last evening a total of 892 voters had enrolled for the coming city el ection. Pendleton Auto Company 1 Hiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiml: civic duty. The eagerness with which men and women have been registering shows that in their hearts the people of this town desire good gov ernment. They are preparing to vote for such conditions to the best of their ability and their willingness to do their part is the first essential in securing the results that should be obtained. But the work of registering should not be allowed to lag. There are hundreds of people who have not yet registered. It is up to them to get to the city hall during the next few days and qualify to vote in December. If you have al ready registered, turn your at tention to having your friends and relatives enroll. Proper government for Pen dleton is dependent upon the people as a whole giving ear nest, consistent attention to the subject. Get busy and do your part. The apartment house need in Pendleton is great. Fre quently traveling men or oth ers would come here to live if more accommodations of this sort could be had. An American ship has been destroyed by a Russian mine; now let the jingoes take up their howl that we should 'at once whip the tar out of the czar and all of his army; or do they resent the loss of ships only when such losses are suf fered at the hands of the Ger mans? Some of the 15,000 or 20.000 ex patriated Americans living In Lon don have of course been compelled to take up their residence there as the representatives of various Im portant business Interests. But no small per centage of them have lo cated there because America Is a new, crude country, with many fea tures distasteful to the most refined natures. The United States Is a good enough country in which to Inherit or make money and from which to draw huge profits on prime city real estate or monopolized natural resour ces, but really too democratic, don'! you know, for the very choicest of spirits. The war has already Introduced many harsh, Irksome conditions into th London cnviro.rr.ent. Some of th..n rill be crnpeiled to give up to the British government as much flu a third of their remittances from this country that help in normal times to keep exchange at par. That Wil liam Waldorf Astor will have to pay $1,250,000 a year in Income tax alone will cause delight on both sides of the water. And the United States fovernment Is now levying an Income tax on all profits derived In this country and is likely to Increase it heavily In coming months. The opening of the war drove back to this country thousands of these ex patriates for whom, up to that time, America had never been good enough. The war taxes will drive back many more.
