(Court Sunday' Journal.)
PORTLAND, Ore. Hog were Just
about able to hold their own at North
Portland during the wee with tops
generally ranging around 36.6a. The
limited amount of Rtufff that went
above this price was not sufficient to
consider a any sort of market factor.
While hog market prices here were
still under depression, there wa an
erratic tine in the eastera trade for
the week, value, however, being gen
erally higher. Top high prices at
leading American centers yesterday
were: Chicago, IS. 45; Kansas City,
18.2(1; St. Louis, 18.50; Omaha, $7.95;
Denver, $7.65; Portland. $7.85.
Prevailing hog prices at Portland
are the cause of much alarm to those
In the Industry. Many are inclined to
lay the blame upon packing Interest
here, who secured the co-operation of
country Interests in greatly Increasing
the volume of hog production under
the promise that values here would
remain for all time at least as high
a Omaha but generally would be on
a parity with Chicago.
Packing Interests are somewhat
Peeved over this placing of the blame
and InsWt that they are scarcely to
blame for present condition, l'nder
normal trade conditions they Mate
the great increase In hog production
would easily be absorbed and prices
remain high but with the consumptive
demand for hot and hog products
unusually low they are unable to take
cure of offerings.
Insistence la again being made in
some quarters that the only hope for
the hog Industry of the Pacific north
west I for the packers here and elsc
v.here along the coat to make the
prlcf of hogs here the basis for the
price of hog products. At the presen'
time the Chicago price Is used and
i astern packers are aide to pay the
huge freight from the east to Port
land and sell at about the saoie prices
as Pacific northwest killers, who arc
t a ing much less money for their
swine requirements.
On the other hand, northwest pack
ing interests hae another alibi, Thev
claim that the hogs from this section
shrink more than do those of the
east. Regarding this, there Is a wide
difference of opinion among livestock
