Twenty Pares East Orcgonian Round-Up Souvenir Edition SOME EXCITING ROUND-UP SCENES Everybody Knows Our Do Poet Sings Fame of Famous Bucker, Old "Long Tom" (By Richard Carter Warlnner, Author of "Th nickaroo," "The liuckar ess" and Other Poems. You've heard I know on you've Jogged slonK, Of the fumoii "bucker," Old Long Tom. Hf spntnk Into fame In one short dav. From a common work-hone, mowing hay To a first class "outlaw" of repute, Simply by being a bucking brute. Long Tom wan peculiar In hi way. His owners Klrkpatrlck, and Allen, ay. But they never dreamed, he'd be re nowned, As the greatest "bucker" ever found. That broncho buatera from near and far. The frenzied crowd shouted "Let 'er - f i i-v ifl :l V ' 'ft f Would strive to lower the "Rising Star." One day, a buekaroo came along He bet his chaps he could ride Long Tom. They placed the saddle on the nag, The broncho boater began to brag. And he tuld, "No common old work hoas," Could buck him off end be his boas." i Well! I want to say In words quite few That Long Tom finished this buek aroo In les sthan ten seconds this "boob" found Himself lying flat on the hard ground. Long Tom then gave a buck or two; He came near killing this buekaroo. 7. H. Smith then took Long Tom" to his ranch, Just to give this "critter" one more . chance To behave himself and mend his ways, And at Pilot Rock, to end his days But his fame, like a town scandal spread. j Cowpunchers soon to the Smith ranch sped. To coniUer this sorrell bucking brute; And to settle a question In dispute "U Old Long Tom, worthy of a place Amongst the famed, In the bucking race ?" With a score or so cowpunchers thrown, The "unconquered" Old Long Tom was known. Prom far Wyoming and Idaho; From range where broncho busters grow, They came to test Old Long Tom's skill, The place of a "champion" to fill. As he dumped each rider and ran amuck. Iluck!" The fume of this bucking workhorse spread; He gecame the broncho busters' dre-ad. Then Pendleton gave her Round-up show. Sheriff Taylor bought Long Tom you know Thin fumous sorrel, this old outlaw, In the damnest bucker, you ever saw. He seems to know, as they lead him out, When all the bleachers begin to shout "Here comes Long Tom! Let 'er buck! Let 'er Buck!" That he Is an object of good luck. Then he looks askance with wicked eye. As much as to say, 'Til win, or die!' There's Llghtfoot, Hotfoot and frisky Snake; All good true horseflesh and wide awake; But Old Long Tom is the peer of all Whether fat or lean, or great' or small. Take this from me, as an honest hunch, Long Tom is the bucker of the bunch. If they take this horse to the Frisco fair. It will be worth while to go down there, And watch the crowds as they gather round On the Panama-Pacific ground. If they honor nun with Long Tom Day, It's a cinch the X-Posish will pay. Ah! many an honest, faithful "hoss," Has tolled and served an exacting boas, To find when his life work has been done. A tuft of sagebrush, a bed of stone. Kicked out on the range without a friend, While lying Tom lives on the best In the land. It Is thus the gay world joggs along To honor such as Old Long Tom; While the sturdy, honest, faithful, oft Are kicked and cuffed, are scourgea and scoffed, These are the heroes of usefulness, With no stone to mark their resting place. This Is the story of Old Long Tom; He will live In fiction and in song A ihe createat broncho of them all He's housed In a clean, warm, well kept stall. With food aplenty, a bed of straw, This the reward of an Old Outlaw. , Uh V m : : - ,1110-- V""--- mm. , B Si ,1 . .1 -and everybody knows !()) ISn. : if- gives the best service for the price, on Plumbing, Sheet Metal Work and Heating Plant Installation Get our prices before you give the work. WASHINGTON". "Fifty boys from the Connecticut reformatory are building a road between Milldale and Hie reformatory, and possibly will go on with the macadam in Cheshire." states E. Kent Hubbard of the board of directors of the reformatory to a representative of the national com mittee on prisons and prison labor. "We had a hard time getting the work started, as there was great op posite to It. but the board was de termined to make the attempt and results to date promise success. When we begun the work we expected that j It would take six months, but now e look to see It finished in four. I "The board has been very fortu.; nate," Mr. Hubbard continued, in se curing as superintendent of the re-j formatory, Charles Henry Johnson, who has been deputy warden under Thomas Mott Osborne at Sing Sing. Mr. Johnson has been helping Mr. Osborne in developing self-government among the prisoners at Sing Sing and will lend every aid to our Mutual Welfare League at Cheshire. "The men detailed for the road work were selected by the league and do not wear stripes or any dis tinctive uniform, and they are taken to the work in trolley cars and have their dinner sent to them. Two of ficers of the Institution accompany them, but act as overseers of tne work, not guards. We do not fear es capes, as the boys have given their word not to attempt escape. Some few. of course, may not have suffi cient Intelligence to live up to the standards of the group, but most of the boys are putting backbone Into the work and doing their part to wards making It a success, I "There Is no limit," Mr. Hubbard concluded, ''to the amount of work that Connecticut prisoners can do on the roads should this first attempt be successful and we hope at the re formatory to work out a labor sys tem profitable to the boys and also to the state." The national committee on prisons and prison labor has for years been battling against the contract system which Is In use In the Connecticut state prison and moat ot the county looks to the work at the reformatory as a big step in the right direction and hopes through the efforts of Mr. the reformatory board to see right labor systems developed in all the S Connecticut penal institutions.
