Taylor did not inform him of the In-1 vemlgation which had been made and i lias not yet told him of the finding f the body. It Is believed that, when confronted with all the facts ascer tained that Richardson will confess. Body VnrartlKtl. Sheriff Taylor. Deputy Estes and Coroner Brown left In the evening in the sheriff's auto and were guided to the old well by Dickey. Under a few Inches of dirt they found a badly de composed body and brought It to the city, Save for the general build of the body nothing was recognizable but the clothes were positively lden- tified as belonging to Owlngs On the' Inside of the inside coat pocket was written the name "J. B. Owlngs'' and the initials "J. B. O." were stamped on the lining of the coat. The shoes and hat were Identified as those worn by Owlngs while In the city. Th'I body was so decomposed and cover, f 3 ed with dirt that no bullet holes were found, but the undertakers will put 3 It in a solution of formaldehyde for a few days, after which they can make a better examination. The theory of the officers Is that Richardson Hired Owlngs into the sparsely settled country around De Spain gulch and murdered him, prob ably In the wagon by shooting him. The murder might have been com mitted, they think, in an abandoned cabin, as Richardson had spoken to Owlngs about "batching'' in an old cabin. Sheriff Taylor believes the man was probably shot In the back while he was unaware of the other's murderous Intentions. lilrliardson Well Known. The alleged murderer Is well known In Pendleton and Umatilla county. Up until about nine years ago, h farmed extensively on the place now owned by George Ness and not a mile and a half from where the body was found. Something like 20 years ng.) he served 14 months in the peniten tiary for stealing a cow from Dr. W. K. Campbell and popular suspicion has fastened Incendiary Jobs to him. For the post few years ho has been in the "down and out" class, working at odd Jobs but seldom holding them Fhyslcally he was not strong and was recently hurt while working on the new wing of the Eastern Oregon State Hospital. He is between 4 5 and 50 years old. His wife divorced him some years ngo, securing the custody of their children, and later married to Tom Purdy, and going to Idaho. 3 According to Mr. Stephenson, Owlngs E told him that he had married Mrs. 11 Purdy and Intended sending for her pg to come here to spend tho winter. 3 Little Is known here of the mur- 5 dered man. He made a number otS mends whllo here and was credited ; with being a very shrewd dealer In horses. He had a trunk, a violin and other possessions and took them In the wagon with him. They have not yet been located but It Is believed Richardson disposed of them. He had $265 In a local bank and the of fleers believe Richardson might have thought he had this money on 'him. At Sat.-amento special meetings will lie held for marketing arA trrt- Elder place gatin practice. Rural credits will be discussed by Dean David P. Bar rows of the University of California, and W..H.
