"scientific men, with Lord Fisher, re

of a suggestion made by Lord Bryce,
former ambassador to the United
i-iates, to the house of lords and fol
lowed upon a discussion In which
similar proposals were made by Sir
William Ramsay and other eminent
scientists.
Lord Bryce pointed out that th3
country needed not only fighting men
but should mobilize its inventive in
genuity in chemistry, mechanics, en
gineering, physics and the whole
range of science. While the American
naw was a few days ahead of the
British in launching this plan, ac
cording to the cables, its Inception In
ho'.h cases was due to lessons of the
war.
The admiralty received 16,000 of
fers of new scientific devices during
the first five months of the war.
Many were from Americans. Another
16.000 doubtless, came under the
stimulus of the next five months. Of
the first 16,000 a board undertook to
eliminate the "crank" proposals and
i educed to 25 the number which, In
the board's Judgment, were worthy of
attention.

25 more rigidly and reduced them to

pan, permits the unloading of much
needed supplies with the rapidity de
sired. Within sixty days 20.000 American
freight cars and 400 American loco
motives will be set down here to car
ry the big shipments of American dy
namite, pig lead, pig copper, cotton.
clothing and other supplies to tha
czar's army corps.
Vast quantities of the American
goods come direct from Xew York
by way of the Panama canai. These
include guns, rifles and ammunition

loaded with hundreds of motor cars
made at Detroit, Cleveland and other
points.
Aleady American and Japan made
war necessaries are piled high on the
hills back of Vladivostok ready for
hasty shipment to the war front Im
mediately upon the arrival of the
American freight cars and locomotives.
Great Britain Is contributing big
guns to Vladivostok's receiving sta
tions. And as quickly as possible
these guns are shipped by railroad to
the Black Sea and mounted on the
warships Russia is building. Some
9-Inch guns have come from Ameri
can manufacturers. A fair amount of
ammunition has arrived from France.

Munich breweries alone deliver. It
is estimated, 140 carloads of beer In
kegs and 60 carloads of bottled beer
ach week. The first contain an av-
rage of 13119 gallons per carload, and
he second 5500 three-quarter liter
icttles. Other breweries deliver 50
arloads of keg beer, 1320 gallons to
i car.
Engaged In making this beer are
he Bavarian State Brewery, the Roy
al Hofbrauhaus and the state-owned
Wihanstephan brewery, in addition to
many private breweries. The army
authorities pay 24 marks for a keg
containing 22 gallons, and 23 marks
for a case containing 50 three-quarter
iter bottles.
Herman Rosenthal was murdered
July 16, 1912. Becker induced Jack
Hose. "Bridgle" Weber, and Harry
Vallon, gamblers to employ "Gib the
Blood," "Lefty Louie,'' "Whitey"
Lewis, and "Dago Frank," well
known thieves, pickpockets and gang
sters, who lived chiefly off the earn
ings of women on the streets, to do
the work.
They rode In an automobile to the
entrance of the Hotel Metropole, In
Forty-third street, the heart of the
Upper Tenderloin" of New York City,
at 1 o'clock In the morning when the

street was brightly lighted. Rosen
thai was called from the restaurant

The murderers were electrocuted at
Sing Sing, April 13, 1914. Becker got
a second trial and his lawyers kept
his case In the court until this time
Becker a reason for the murder was
that Rosenthal, whose gambling house

New York, to give Information which

"Murderpd" Nan Is Home.
MILWAUKEE, July 28. Frank
Klug. for whose supposed murder
Nick Goerglan Is serving twenty-five
ymra In prison, and whose "body"
was Identified by relatives, returned
to his family today.
Klug, It was supposed, was slain on
August 22 last near Lake Station, this
county. Georgian was arrested and
convicted, although he denied his
guilt, and was sentenced December 5.
According to attorneys and officials
here, the fact that It was not Klug
who was murdered will make no dif
ference to Georgian. That a man
was murdered was well established,
they laid, and the circumstantial ev
idence positively connected Georgian
with the crime.
Klug left his home because he
feared arrest for desertion.

Saves Baby Carried to Sea.
BEVERLY, Mass , July 28. Wood
bury, the two-year-old daughter or
Mrs. Rowland Woodbury, of No. l
Blssen street, had a narrow escape
from drowning this afternoon wnen
carried out to sea on a log which
had drifted In to the beach where the
child was playing.
The child seated herself on the end
of the log which had drifted upon
the beach, but the ebbing tide soon
carried the bit of driftwood away,
with little Martha sitting astride it
Seeing her plight, Louis Hamburger
started to her rescue. The little girl
slipped from the log Into the water,
but was rescued by Hamburger.
