stranger walked up to Cooper, ac
cording to his report to the police,

WALLA WALLA, Wash., July 21.
I K. W Hoppel, traveling freight agent
for the Northern Pacific returned
yesterday morning from Gibbon sta
tion, where he assisted in loading a
train of sheep bound for eastern mar
kets, and where he was severly bitten
, by a wild sheep dog. Mr. Hoppel is
limping from his injury, which came
near resulting in blood poisoning. He
states that he had a hard fight with
the animal.

for Spokane to attend to further ship

Little Child Is Injured.
News was received here today of an
injury to the little three year old child
of Mr. and Mrs. Brady Howdyshell
yesterday afternoon. According to the
report the little one was playing near!

in such manner as to make a gash near
her eye. It was necessary for several!

Governor Refuses to Issue Papers.
Attorney D. W. Bailey this morning
received a telegram from Governor
Withycombe announcing that he had
decided to refuse to issue the requisi
tion papers for Warren W. Smart, held
in the local jail and wanted in Walla
Walla on a charge of abandonment of
a child. Mr. Bailey made a showing
to the governor yesterday and it was
upon this showing that the governor
has made his decision. Mr. Bailey
showed that Mr. Smart was not a fu
gitive from justice but has been work
ing upon the Stubblefield ranch in the
east end of the county for some
months and made no effort to conceal
his whereabouts. He also showed that
he had been arrested for contempt of
court and tried In the Walla Walla
court last May for alleged refusal to
fulfill the terms of a decree of divorce
given his wife. He was acquitted In

Today is the hottest day of the sum
mer so far and last night was the hot
test niylu, according to the official
records. This afternoon Just before
3 o'clock the "mercury reached 101,
three degrees higher than it went yes
terday. Last ninht the minimum
temperature recorded was 61 which
is three degrees higher than the min
imum for the season heretofore.

IDAHO FALLS. July 21. The en
tire community is aroused over the
ahduetlon and holding for ransom of
E. A. Empey, a wealthy cattle and
sheepman, by an armed bandit Satur
day night in the mountainous countr
near the Wyoming line. The bandit
sent word to relatives by Empay's
son he will be killed Saturday It a
ransom of six thousand dollars Is not
paid. Hundreds of determined men
are volunteering to search for the
endangered man but only cowboys
familiar with the country are choin
by the sheriff.
Ten armed cowboys made a thor
ough search of Sheep mountain In
v.-hlch direction the abductor took
his captive, without result. ' Blood
hounds from Salt Lake have been put
on the trail. Relatives are dlstra-' ted.
The bandit threatened relatives If
they told the authorities of the ab
duction or the ransom demand.

Does anyone know the whereabouts
of George Earle Mcl'lure, familiarly
known as "Shorty" McClure? His
wjfe, living in Centralia, VYn., Is very
much distracted over his disappear
ance and is writing to local people
in the hopes of learning something
of him. He was here last spring and
went to Richland. Vn. From Rich
land he wrote his wife that he was
working his way to Wajla Walla and
Pendleton. Mrs. McClhre states he
had considerable money and she Is
fearful of foul play. Also, she states,
he Is subject to fits and fears he may
be sick some place. He Is a farm
hand.

In the first thresher fire of the sea
son for Umatilla county the large
stationary outfit of J. H. Key, two
miles northwest of Weston, was de
stroyed by fire about noon today. The
miles northwest of Weston, was de
some grain. The men saved a field
in which the machine was located by
plowing around the fire.
News of the fire was brought to the
city this afternoon by P. T. Harbour,
manager of the Weston brickyard and
a relative of the owner of the machine.

trying to put through. A petition
asking the council to pave Madison
from Jackson to Wilson has been cir
culated during the past few days and
will be presented to the council this
evening. It Is understood that 00

represented on the petition and that
a number of other .property owners
have agreed to sign neither a petition
or a remonstrance.
A week ago a petition was present
ed asking for the paving of Main
from Jackson to Wilson, Wilson from
Main to Matlock and Matlock from
Wilson to Raley. Tills petition wUl
probably be acted upon tonight and
It is likely that Madison street will
be Included In the district.
