TILOT ROCK, Ore., June H. ( Special In the best gam ever seen tn Pilot Rock, the Pebbtes won their tenth consecutive victory by a score of 2 to 0 yesterday over the Stanfleld-Eeho boys. Despite the fact that each team was short two of Its best players, the game was brilliant with fast fielding, while the ptteh ing of both Darling and Harlan waff of a remarkable character. Off of Darling the visitors got but one lonesome bingle, F. Markham connecting safely In the second frame. On the other hand the hard hfttlng Pebbles could only find Har lan for four safettes. Besides twirling a wonderful game. Lefty Darling got two of Pilot Rock's hits, batting a thousand for the day and winning his own game. Pilot Rock made her two scores in the very first frame before Harlan got down to form and after that It was a straight row of blanks. The visitors were shy the Hosktns brothers and had to pick up two men In Pendleton to take their places. However, Gilbert and Westgate were out of the Pebbles' line-up. One of the features of the game wag "F. Markham's running catch of Ed Smith's line drive. The score: StanHeld. AB R H PO A E R. Norman. 3b ...4 0 0 1 3 0 Lundwall, 2b 4 0 0 2 4 0 L. Travis, aced 53. showel a crowd of young golfers what he could do at his age when lie won the Metropolitan Championship on 'Long Island aprainst a field of men of na tional renown In the game. Travis rit-ht now weighs nearly 140 pounds and is about five feet eight inches in height. He wears glasses because the strain of watching golf tails during many years has slightly Impaired his sight His costume on the links norfolk jacket and knlcker. bockers is the traditional uniform. It la very popular with many of the older golfers. A big black cigar com pletes the figure of Travis that Is so familiar In all the tournaments. A peep Into the Travis golf bag gives a good Insight Into the man's deep study of his favorite sport. Ills clubs are the weirdest collection you ever saw, drivers, with big knots on them, mashles shaped "like fish hooks and putters exceptional for their bulk. But they all serve their purpose. For his weight and age Travis drives a remarkably long ball off the tee, the reward of perfect swinging and correct timing. Like Harry Var don, the celebrated English champion, Travis will always sacrifice distance for direction, not only because It Is the proper thing to do, but advancing years have taken some power from his arms and shoulders. EUGENE, Ore., June 14. A step toward abolishing Intercol- leglate athletics at the Unlver- slty of Oregon, the same to go Into effect a year from now, If the resolution Is adopted, was taken at a meeting of the unl- versity faculty Saturday. The promotion of scholarship and also the promotion of a less In- tensiflfd form of Intra-colleglate athletics for a greater number of students, rather than a select- ed few, Is given ng the occasion for the resolution. A mighty good doctor sqys to me once: "When it comes to curin' folks, Nature is the real M. D. I'm only her assistant. ' That's the way 1 feel about curin' tobacco for VELVET. TPS hard to show Nature any- thing about curing tobacco. So we have adopted Nature's own way to make VELVET the smoothest smoking tobacco slow, patient ageing. Men may "process," but they cant put into tobacco any finer pipe qualities than those Kentucky's limestone soil so richly gives to the Burley de Luxe, But these qualities can be improved. They are brought out in their fullness in the aged-in-the-wood mellowness of cool, slow-burning VELVET. For two years the finest Burley leaf remains in sealed wooden casks, ana then only is it ready to be made into VELVET. Get your tin now join the growing ranks of the army who have found VELVET tobacco a delight without a single drawback.
